Lake of The Woods and Green-
woods Camps. "The program
really is about developing graph-
ics skills, doing graphics pro-
gramming and so forth. It is not
really for playing games."
A major reason parents shell
out thousands of dollars to
camps each summer is to get
their children outside and away
from computer games. So why
do camps feel this technology
should be included in summer
activities? "They're a part of
everyday life," says Mr. Stevens
of Camp Walden. "Computers
are part of an attempt to be cre-
ative."
But not everyone agrees "We
sort of resisted going to those
kinds of things," says Laurence
Cohn, director of Maplehurst
Camp. "This is their opportuni-
ty to get out and see nature and
learn things not that tradition-

Some years ago, Maplehust
merged with a computer camp
from Minneapolis, but after
three years got rid of the com-
puters. "We just felt like it was
not really benefiting the chil-
dren," Mr. Cohn explains.
"The kids were very disinterest-
ed in learning," he says. "They
wanted to play games or do
their own things. They just
wanted to stay in the computer
room all day long—it didn't
matter if it was gorgeous out
Parents would say to us, 'These
kids are coming home and they
look like they've never seen the
sunlight"
Mr. Cohn feels that the best
methods are the tried and true
ones. "The programs that are
most popular for us still are tra-
ditional kinds of things," he
says. "They love painting, all the

to educate, but in a way that
the children won't know
they're learning. The camp at
Congregation Shaarey Zedek
helps teach the Hebrew lan-
guage to first- through third-
graders and next year they will
begin using computers to aid
them in this task. "They'll be
doing different activities ... all re-
volving around learning differ-
ent pieces of a curriculum," says
Michael Wolf, director of educa-
tion and youth. "And one of
those pieces will be the comput-
er."
"The computer makes it fun
to do repetitive things," says Sh-
eryl Litt, director of the camp.
"It's all done through games
and having a good time, so the
computers will be used in that
component," she says. "If a
teacher stands up and drills the
same letter and sounds over
and over again, the kid is bored.
The computer makes it more
fun." Mn Wolf adds, "You have
to do it in a fun way 'cause
that's what camp's all about"
But how can a computer
make it fun to learn? "Basically,
games," Mt Wolf says. "Rein-
forcing the Hebrew that they're
learning. They're games to rein-
force."
Mt Stevens of Camp Walden
agrees that computer games
used in a camp setting should
be educational. "We try to se-
lect games where there is some
learning going on," he says,
"but as a recreational tool."
In fact, most of the camps
that use computers were quick
to separate their programs from
non-educational games most
children play. "We don't allow
them unless they have created
the games themselves by their
\-) own programming," says Ean
Cuthbert, assistant director of
