"For the young-at-heart who would like a face to match" Food Allergies: Few But Severe Environmental irritants trigger half of all asthma attacks, fol- lowed by allergens, respiratory infections, exercise and food al- lergies. Just 6-8 percent of asthmatic children and 2 percent of asth- matic adults — out of 10 million Americans with asthma — have symptoms triggered by food sources. A brochure offered by the In- ternational Food Information Council Foundation and Scripps Clinic and &search Famdation in La Jolla, Calif., outlines foods that have been shown to trigger asthma symptoms. According to "What You Should Know About Asthma and Food," substantial scientif- ic investigation has shown that sulfites and sulfiting agents can cause wheezing and other symp- toms. These include sulfur diox- ide, sodium bisulfite, potassium bisulfite, sodium metabisulfite, potassium metabisulfite and sodium sulfate. And they can be found in dried fruits, dried veg- etables, wine, shrimp, bottled lemon or lime juice and pickled foods, such as pickles, relishes, peppers and sauerkraut. Allergies to foods like milk, eggs, peanuts, tree nuts, soy, wheat, fish and shellfish also can exacerbate asthma symptoms. However, not everyone who is di- agnosed with a food allergy also suffers from asthma. It would seem easy to avoid foods that trigger asthma, but sometimes asthmatics also have to be food detectives, reading food labels and asking about in- gredients when ordering meals in restaurants. The brochure is available free by sending a self-addressed, stamped, legal-sized envelope to Asthma and Food, IFIC Foun- dation, P.O. Box 65708, Wash- ington, DC 20035. It's also available on the Internet at http://www.ificinfo.health.org . As a result, some orthodontists report that they are seeing 25 percent more patients under the age of eleven than they did just a few years ago. While problems with teeth and jaws may be corrected at any age, there are compelling reasons to get an early jump on them. Because young growing teeth and bones are more pliable than older ones, they lend them- selves to greater changes in a shorter period of time. Early treatment also re- duces the risk of relapse because teeth and bones that complete their growth under treatment are set more solidly in their positions. To find out if your child could benefit from early treatment, it is a good idea to have him or her exam- ined by the orthodontist by age seven. Every orthodontist's philosophy is a little different, but most agree that when treatment is begun at an early age, teeth can be moved into their proper positions more easily, with less physical discom- fort for your child and better retention after braces come off.
