Tuesday, January 14, at 7:30 p.m. You're chatting with friends at the local Jewish center, and someone brings up the topic of Finland's Jews. You don't want to sound like a schlemiel, but what do you say? If you're a Jewish cybernaut, you needn't fear intellectual em- barrassment; a new site on the World Wide Web provides a fas- cinating glimpse of Jewish life in Helsinki, that nation's capital. The Helsinki Jewish communi- ty page opens with a striking pic- ture of the city's main synagogue, circa 1906, and an easy-to-use menu of choices. Visitors can begin with a con- cise account of a Jewish com- munity that had its origins in the first half of the 19th century when Jewish soldiers in the Russian army were permitted to stay in Finland after their dis- charge. The newcomers weren't ex- actly welcomed; discharged Jew- ish soldiers were limited to certain occupations, and they were forbidden from attending fairs or working outside their towns of residence. Things got better in 1918, when the Finnish parliament approved a law al- lowing Jews to become full citi- zens. The site briefly describes Fin- land's odd status during World War II, and the full integration of the Jewish population after the war. When Israel emerged from the ashes of the Holocaust, Finnish- Jewish volunteers "represented the highest per-capita participa- tion of any Diaspora Jewish com- munity." The site also contains detailed descriptions of a sur- prisingly vibrant Jewish com- munity life in Finland; soon, it will offer information for Jewish visitors and Web links to other Jewish communities in the re- gion. In a way, it's the Internet at its best — a medium that can shrink the world by providing a window into faraway lives. Thanks to computer networking, the Jewish world is coming to- gether as never before; check it out by setting your Web brows- er to: communities in the region. http ://www.helsinki. fliaschul- ma/srk/home.htm — James D.
