he year 1991 was a troubled
one in U.S.-Israel relations,
but it did wonders for Jew-
ish unity. Despite deep di-
visions over the best route to
Mideast peace, American Jews
came together to oppose the
heavy-handed diplomacy of the
Bush administration.
Fans of that kind of confronta-
tional U.S.-Israel relationship may
be in for a treat in the corning year.
Prime Minister Binyamin Ne- -
tanyahu and President Clinton
are on a collision course; Mr. Clin-
ton's blunt criticism of the 6-
month-old Likud government's
settlement policies recently and
the blast from a group of former
top U.S. officials were unmistak-
able warnings of the hazards
ahead.
But this time around, Jewish
leaders fear that the community
may not leap so quickly to Israel's
defense.
Four years of progress on the
peace front and a growing de-
tachMent from Israel suggest that
the Jewish community of 1997
will be very different from the one
that responded with such anger
to George Bush's threats in 1991.
Support for Israel remains
strong, but it is unclear whether
