"A Diet Plan That Works."

the disk that allows the disk's
pulpy interior to push through
and impinge on a nerve.
A herniated disk can be
caused by a sudden injury, but
it's usually the result of the disk
having weakened with age. That
starts to happen in the 30s, with
41 or so the peak age for herni-
ated disks, Dr. Maxey said.
The vast majority of herniat-
ed disks can be treated without
surgery, said Dr. Maxey. A doc-
tor will have a patient undergo
a therapeutic exercise program,
with the goal of centralizing the
pain; that is, getting the pain to
recede from the leg until it's felt
only in the back.
More serious cases of herni-
ated disks may require surgery,
said Dr. Maxey, though some
can be treated with cortisone in-
jections.
Other signs that a back prob-
lem should be looked at by a
physician: weakness or numb-
ness in the leg or foot; loss of
bladder or bowel control, which

could indicate damage to nerves
at the base of the spinal column;
pain in other locations, such as
the abdomen or the groin; and
back pain if it occurs in children,
teens or senior citizens.
Besides treating the immedi-
ate problem, a physician will
also advise back pain sufferers
to start exercising, if they don't
already. A recent study found a
person's overall state of fitness
to be one of the prime factors in-
volved in whether that person
would suffer recurrent back
pain, said Dr. Maxey.
Also a major factor, accord-
ing to that study, was whether
the person smoked, said Dr.
Maxey. That could be because
the lowered oxygen content in
smokers' blood means their
disks don't get enough oxygen,
or because "smokers' cough"
weakens the disks over time,
Dr. Maxey said. ❑
