is 10 a.m. Tuesday, three days prior

To be sure, funds are required
to finance the kibbutz educational
system, its health services, the
upkeep of its beautiful gardens
and other communal services.
These are obtained by imposing
a levy on the earnings of mem-
bers, with those who earn more
paying a higher levy and others
paying a lower one. But aside
from that levy, people spend their
money on whatever they please.
They can not only buy toys for
their children or clothing for
themselves, but even add a floor
to their kibbutz-provided home
or buy a car — there are no re-
strictions.
Many traditional kibbutz
institutions have been modified.
For example, neither break-
fast nor supper are served in
Kadarim's dining hall. Still avail-
able is lunch (for which members
pay), as well as Friday night and
holiday meals (which are pro-
vided by the community).
Going still further in another
sphere, the kibbutz laundry has
been closed down. Now families
do their own laundry, using
washing machines supplied by
the kibbutz.
Kadarim has certainly dis-
tanced itself from the former ide-
ological cornerstone of the
kibbutz: "From each according to
his abilities, to each according to
his needs." But the new system
seems to work, at least in
Kadarim. ❑
