Pro-Israel groups were fairly ec-
static about last week's appoint-
ment of Rep. Bill Richardson,
D-New Mexico, as U.N. ambas-
sador.
Mr. Richardson, a leading His-
panic voice in Congress, has "been
a very strong, behind-the-scenes
supporter of Israel," according to
a leading pro-Israel lobbyist. "He
has been instrumental in working
with the Hispanic caucus, espe-
cially on the foreign aid issue."
During a television appearance
in September, Mr. Richardson ar-
gued against U.S. efforts to pres-
sure the government in Jerusalem
— a statement that pro-Israel
groups are likely to throw back at
him in the months to come.
Mr. Richardson, who grew up
in Mexico City, has served as an
unofficial envoy to North Korea,
Iraq, Haiti and Sudan, generally
to help win the freedom of Amer-
icans under detention.
"He hasn't been very visible on
the Middle East, but he's been
very supportive," said Dan Mari-
aschin, director of public policy for
B'nai B'rith. "People are very
pleased with this appointment,
and believe that he will be good to
work with." ❑

with the Jewish state.
Jewish lifestyle and education
in Israel will now be supervised
by Orthodox rabbis who will make
sure that the public perception of
Jewish identity will coincide with
Orthodox criteria.
Effective resistance to this cat-
astrophic development can only
come from a clear revival of the
Herzl vision in this centennial
year. Religion and state must be
separated. The caste system of re-
ligious classification must be aban-
doned. The clergy must be
privatized, receiving their support
from private enthusiasm and pri-
vate money. No clergy — whether
Orthodox, Conservative or Reform
— should be in charge of marriage,
divorce or national identity.
Without this vision, it is im-
possible to negotiate effectively
with the Orthodox. Throwing
crumbs to the Reform and Con-
servative clergy who eagerly buy
into the caste system so long as
they are included is, to say the
least, humiliating.
Without this vision — even if
the peace process is revived and
succeeds — the Jewish state will
turn into a Jewish version of what
the first halutzim were trying to
escape. The heirs to the original
Zionist idealism will flee to other
places.
