Fusco, Shaffer and Pappas,
Inc., the Southfield architectur-
al firm that designed Hechtman
II, has been hired to draw up
plans for the new project. It has
designed it to allow for a second,
mirror-image apartment build-
ing. Nelson Tremain, a
Minneapolis-based geriatric ar-
chitectural consulting firm, has
also been hired for the project.
Ms. Goldsmith said the initial
plan is to break ground for the
first building next summer and
open it in 1998.
"That's our dream. Because
the zoning thing is taking so
long, it's seeming like it could
take longer," she said.
If the request clears the town-
ship, the United Jewish Foun-
dation would determine which
parcel to build upon, and the

Jewish Federation of Metropol-
itan Detroit has requested that
JFA do a market feasibility
study to determine demand.
"That's to test the market to
make sure there's need," Ms.
Goldsmith said.
"Full rent would be $800 [per
month]. We have to make sure
the market can bear that rent
and that we'll be able to fill 100
units. We have 825 people on
our waiting list and we've had
that many people on the list for
years," she said.
All JFA buildings except
Hechtman II are HUD-financed.
Ms. Goldsmith explained that
these federal funds are no longer
available in the Detroit region.
Hechtman II was financed
through bond sales, the plan in
place for the new project.

them every day to make sure
they're okay.
Established in October, Jcare
offers a "medication reminder"
service, "assurance checks" to
make sure residents are okay, a
"tuck-in" service to make sure
they make the transition to bed-
time, companion services, dining
room escorts, meal preparation
and bathing assistance. Jcare Di-
rector Risa Britten, a registered
nurse who has served as JFA's
controller for over three years,
along with an administrator, hire
certified nursing assistants as
they are needed. At the moment,
there are four or five on hand.
`The response has been over-
whelming. We're really very
pleased at how well it's going, so
quickly. We had one resident, a
lovely older woman, who had not
been seen much in the building.
A Jcare worker comes in now,
gets her up in the morning, helps
her put on her makeup. She's
down in the lobby every morn-
ing. The difference is phenome-
nal. That's the whole reason we
created Jcare.
"We have a lot of people who
come home from hospitals, re-
hab, whatever, and just need a
little short-term care, and we
can do that for them," Ms. Brit-
ten said.
"It's not health care," Ms.
Goldsmith emphasized. "It's
not skilled related, there are no
therapies, we don't administer
medications."
So far, the company has
been self-supporting.
About 20 of JFA's 667 resi-
dents are using Jcare services,
with the "assurance checks" the
most popular at the moment,
Ms. Goldsmith said. The cost
for many of the services, in-
cluding medication reminders,
is $75 per month. Hourly vis-
its are $13.50.
