ISRAEL SUMMER FARES Presented by Nelson (Nick) Hersh, D.D.S., M.S. at Licensed ADULT MATTERS WINTER RATES fate of the 11,000 other Jewish children who were sent from France to the death camps. A second "must-see" is the grim, stone municipal building in downtown Lyon which was Gestapo headquarters and which has now been converted into the impressive Center of the History of Resistance and Deportation. Lyon had been the center of the underground movement, in which Jews played no small part. Visitors walk through a series of dimly lit corridors — with full il- lumination directed to the walls, containing the photographs and biographies of the hundreds of men, women and even children who fought the Nazis in France and were eventually arrested, tortured and executed. The cen- ter is on the right bank of the Rhone, at 14 Ave. Berthelot; it is open daily from 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. There is an admission charge. Lyon is a remembrance of a tragic past, but, for the Jewish traveler, it is also a city of great hope. Meeting Chief Rabbi Richard Wertenschlag in his of- fice at the Great Synagogue — completely restored since the Nazis razed it to the ground — we learned that Lyon's pre-war Jewish population has swelled to 35,000. There are, among other institutions in the community, 22 synagogues, several mikvot, half- a-dozen kosher restaurants and two, large kindergarten-through- 8th-grade day schools. We visited both schools, their classrooms virtually overflowing with lively, enthusiastic children. There are more than 1,200 pupils in attendance, a substantial pro- portion of the city's Jewish chil- dren in the 4-to-14 range. And expansion of both schools is un- der way to accommodate the in- creasing number of students in that age category. Rabbi Wertenschlag, himself the father of six children, foresees a bright future for all the children of an ever-growing Jewish corn- munity. It is a future grounded in an awareness of a past histo- ry that "can never be repeated," he says. In our final evening in Lyon, we attended a concert of remem- brance and hope which the rab- bi had organized at the Great Synagogue. The concert was a benefit for the Izieu Children's Home, and the immense, vault- ed sanctuary was filled to over- flowing for the occasion. If you think that fixed orthodontic ap- pliances ("braces") are only intended for adolescents and younger children, you may be surprised to learn that more than 300,000 adults are fitted with braces each year. Most of these adult patients are women. The usual reason for seeking or- thodontic treatment later in life is usu- ally cosmetic, but orthodontic treatment may also be needed to prevent decay and gum disease caused by crowded teeth or tooth loss resulting from a bad bite (mal- occlusion). One advance in orthodontics that makes the idea of treatment more palatable to adults is the use of tiny brackets, made of stainless steel, tooth- colored ceramic, or clear plastic. These brackets require fewer adjustments than the old bulky bands with their signature "train-track" look. Orthodontic treatment can be suc- cessful at any age, and about 25% of or- Windsor-Tel Aviv from $939 (Expires Jan. 15. 1997) (810) FLY EL-AL Traditional. Spiritual. Sensational.
