state. As far as I'm concerned,
it's Israel's decision, pure and
simple. After all, who will have
to live with the consequences?
In any case, the future of the
territories is not the issue. The
question is whether Jews will
be allowed to live there regard-

less of who oversees the area.

I guess some-(inevitably Jews
— why is it that gentiles are al-
most always more informed and
sympathetic on this?) have no
problem saying there are places
that would be better without
Jews. But I resent such a notion,
as should anyone who values
democracy, freedom and moral-
ity.
The next time you read a
piece on why Israel should force
the "settlers" out of the territo-
ries, imagine hearing about an
American neighborhood plan-
ning to kick out all its residents
of Mexican ancestry — and the
many Jewish groups support-
ing the plan.
It's not that anyone in the
neighborhood is prejudiced. Of
course not! But What's wrong
with the idea if the vast major-
ity of residents want it, need to
be with "their own kind"? Don't
they have the right to determine
who lives in their neighborhood?
And besides, it will make the
area so much more "peaceful."
Tell me, if you can: What
would be more shameful? ❑

with the growing problem of
common law courts.
It is important not to confuse
loud or self-righteous, feel-good
pronouncements with effective
community relations. Public pro-
nouncements and actions are im-
portant in getting recognition
and action on important issues
and groups, and sometimes in-
dividuals need to be put on the
record, though they might pre-
fer not to. Just as important, and
more common, is the behind-the-
scenes work of quietly and dili-
gently establishing relationships,
resolving conflicts and improv-
ing situations.

The work of Jewish commu-
nity relations is to have the con-
nections and ability to pursue
either strategy effectively.
We should take some comfort
in the low levels of anti-Semitism
all the while knowing that it is
due to hard work by many. And
that work deserves — and needs
— to be joined and supported. 0
