$119.99.
To design pages, some con-
gregations have relied on the
brain power of volunteer con-
gregants. At Adat Shalom, con-
gregant Jeffrey Leder assists Ms.
Marx each month with upload-
ing new data to keep the con-
gregation's page fresh and
calendar listing timely.
In addition to being cheap and
easy to create, the Web sites also

i,

Rabbi Daniel Moskowitz: Go Blue —
not Blue Devils.

marketing tool for the shuls.
"We have received e-mail from
as far away as Israel, thanking
us for our booklet, 'In Time of
Sorrow,' and from Mexico, ask-j
ing for help from a college stu-
dent writing a paper to assist
Jewish people who are grieving,"
said Leonard Baruch, executive
director of Shaarey Zedek.
Others in communities far
from Shaarey Zedek or Adat
Shalom have used the Internet
information as a way to revisit
congregations or conveniently

shul-shop without ever leaving
their home.
"We had one man who had
been here as a teen-ager and
moved West. He found us on the
Internet and thought it was cool,"
Ms. Marx said.
But while the congregations
hope to market their shul to peo-
ple near and far, they mostly
want to serve their members in
an effective, cheap and futuris-
tic manner. Some believe that in
the not too distant future, the
World Wide Web will be the pri-
mary communications tool for
members, perhaps saving
postage while taking the
place of a monthly member
bulletin.
Others see the Internet as
an opportunity to teach.
Rabbi Joshua Bennett of
Temple Israel said the tem-
ple's page will contain cur-
sory information on the
shul's history and a calen-
dar, and someday will offer
an educational forum.
"We want to be on the
forefront of Jewish educa-
tion, and we feel that this
will be one of the tools of the
future," he said.
For now, however, the
medium serves as a good
way to leave messages for
rabbis and staff members.
Temple Shir Shalom Rab-
bi Michael Moskowitz recently
mentioned during Shabbat ser-
vices that he was a fan of Duke
University's basketball team,
raising the ire of several congre-
gants. Following Duke's narrow
loss to the University of Michi-
gan, Rabbi Moskowitz received
no less than seven e-mail mes-
sages proclaiming the Wolver-
ines' glorious trouncing of the
Blue Devils.
"After Duke had not won, peo-
ple felt the need to let me know,"
he said, laughing.
