tourists away from Israel. There
are other internationally re-
ported events that give potential
tourists a bad impression of the
country, like the beating of
Palestinians by Israeli border
policemen and the alleged mur-
der of a Palestinian boy by a
West Bank settler.
Some 2.5 million foreign visi-
tors came to Israel in 1995,
bringing $3 billion into the econ-
omy. And 1996 began like it was
going to break the tourism
records set the previous year —
for the first three months, the
number of tourists was up by
nearly 30 percent over the same
period in 1995. Then came the
long crash.
Ironically, one of the main
reasons given by the Israeli gov-
ernment and Jerusalem munci-
pality for opening the Has-
monean Tunnel was to aid the
tourism industry, especially
Arab merchants. Until Septem-
ber, visitors entered the tunnel
next to the Western Wall,
walked through and had to come

back out the entrance. By open-
ing the exit on the Via Dolorosa
in the Muslim Quarter, visitors
could go straight through from
the Jewish Quarter to the
Moslem Quarter and shop there,
government officials had ex-
plained.
Three months later, while both
Arab and Jewish merchants are
suffering, one of the only tourist
sites that's seen an upsurge of vis-
itors is the Hasmonean Thnnel it-
self. Earlier this week, a dozen
people, most of them Jews, were
waiting to go in.
"Why not? It belongs to us,
doesn't it?" said Patrick Biton of
Paris.
In the past, the tunnel could
only admit one group of visitors
per hour because people had to
walk all the way in and all the
way back, a security guard at
the entrance explained. "But
since they opened the exit, peo-
ple can go straight out at that
end, and now we can take about
four or five groups an hour," he
said. "We're doing very well." CI
