`The past year has been the most
tragic of my life." It began with
Yitzhak Rabin being murdered
before my eyes. Then came the
terrorist attacks and hearing peo-
ple shout "traitor" and "murder-
er" at me when I went to the sites.
`Then the Katyusha attacks in
the north, and then losing the elec-
tions. It hasn't been easy. But I
don't regret it. I believe I did what
I had to do."
Seated in his spacious Tel Aviv
office, his Nobel Peace Prize cita-
tion featured prominently behind
his shoulder, Israeli Labor Party
and opposition leader Shimon
Peres seems unusually subdued
and tired, almost worn.
Veteran "Peres watchers" say
that at 73 he sometimes has diffi-
culty keeping up with the mur-
derous pace he still set for himself
after almost 50 years in public ser-
vice. He probably feels even
greater pressure with only five
more months as chairman of his
Party. •
By mid-1997, Mr. Peres is
scheduled to complete the surely
painful transition from being Is-
rael's most powerful leader to its
most respected "elder statesman"
— unless, of course, a national uni-
ty government is formed before
then.
Mr. Peres, who lost last May's
election by less than 1 percent,
tends to ascribe his defeat to mix-
ture of factors outside of his in-
fluence — war with Lebanon, bus
bombings and a better campaign
by his opponents.
