RUTHAN BRODSKY SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

orking out with a
personal trainer is
chic these days.
At one time, ton-
ing one's body and sculpting mus-
cles under the watchful tutelage
of a professional trainer was for
the indulgence of the profession-
al athlete, rock star, talk show
host and corporate mogul.
Today, the rich and famous are
joined by youthful professionals
wanting to maintain their sleek-
ness, suburban housewives moti-
vated to attack flab, paunchy
middle-aged and not so middle-
aged men recognizing life's warn-
ing signals, and post-menopausal
women aspiring to age gracefully.
According to Jeff Bowman,
spokesperson for the National
Federation of Professional Train-
ers, the numbers of professional
personal trainers has swelled in
the last five years. The associa-
tion lists more than 6,000 personal
trainers among its members and
the American College of Sports
Medicine has an active roster of
15,000.
That's good news for the many
interested in physical fitness
enough to hire a personal trainer.
Although using a trainer may
seem a luxury, paying someone to

instruct, push and coach is an ex-
cellent health investment for those
who might sit too long on the
couch or at their desk rather than
working on their target heart rate,
strength, or range of motion.
For the past four years, Sue
Solomon of Walled Lake has been
working out three times a week
with personal trainer Shant
Gharibian, owner of Exclusive Fit-
ness in West Bloomfield.
"I want to feel comfortable with
my trainer," says Mrs. Solomon.
"For instance, Shant knows when
I'm having a crummy day, and he
may end up listening to me more
than pushing me to work out.
"I also want someone who is
knowledgeable about injuries. I
ride horses and play tennis and a
wrist, ankle, or shoulder is usual-
ly in some state of damage. He
works with me to strengthen these
areas so I'll have less injuries."
Developing a trusting and re-
spectful relationship is always a
goal for trainers who work with
the same client two or three times
a week, whether it's for six months
or six years.
"You have to know when to
talk, and when not to talk too
much; how far to push and when
to praise," says Mr. Gharibian. "As

a trainer, I watch not only their
technique but their face and their
body language. I want them to
walk out of here feeling good and
that they've accomplished some-
thing."
Fitness devotee Dr. Jim
Kohlenberg of Birmingham rec-
ommends going to a large health
club to find a good personal train-
er. "Larger clubs have more staff
and are usually in a better posi-
tion to hire quality trainers," he
says. "I want to work out with
someone who is experienced, has
a good understanding of the
anatomy, and knows everything
about the machines he uses.
`Those exercise machines can
cause injury by generating ab-
normal stress on a joint if they're
not adjusted to fit an individual's
body. Each requires a particular
motion that needs to be performed
correctly. The motions for free
weights are more natural, but it's
still important that the proper
technique be used.
"I work out with Christian
Thompson, the head of personal
training at Beverly Hills Racquet
Club, and it's his job to motivate
me for those last few reps and
make certain I'm using the equip-
ment the right way."
