omeday, Judy Marx ex-
pects to surf to shul.
No, Ms. Marx does not
live on the seaboard, and
the surfing she will be doing does
not require a swimsuit.
Ms. Marx, communications di-
rector for Adat Shalom Syna-
gogue in Farmington Hills,
already can turn on her comput-
er, log on to the Internet and go
to Adat Shalom's Web page.
There she finds a commentary
on this week's Torah portion,
membership information (in-
cluding rates) and a family ac-
tivity page. She
gleans information
about the shul's
cemetery or adult
education offerings,
gets in touch with
one of the congre-
gation's college stu-
dents or sends a
tribute. If Ms. Marx
wanted to get in the
car and drive to the
synagogue, there is
a map for her, as well.
It is only a matter of tinkering
and time that stands in the way
of Adat Shalom offering a more
interactive online forum.
"We felt that the page would
be a major communications tool
in the future and that it would
behoove us to get into this now,"
Ms. Marx said.
Adat Shalom is one of less
than a handful of shuls in the
metro region and one of hun-
dreds nationally that have a site
on the World Wide Web. Already,
Shaarey Zedek and Temple Shir
Shalom have pages up and run-

S

ning, and Temple Israel plans to
debut its site in mid-January.
A growing number of other lo-
cal congregations are either in
the process of constructing a page
or have plans to do so in the next
year.
The sites themselves, which
can be one or more pages, are as
diverse as the reasons for their
creation. While all have some sort
of historical description of the
congregation, some have pictor-
ial tours, biographies of clergy
and entire past sermons.
For example, Congregation
Shaarey Zedek's
home page, located
on the United Syn-
agogue for Conser-
vative Judaism's
(USCJ) server out
of its New York
headquarters, car-
ries a booklet On
grieving in addition
to a wedding plan-
ner guide.
Adat Shalom,
which has the most extensive site
in terms of uplinks to other pages
it carries and diverse offerings,
carried a Chanukah theme on
last month's family page featur-
ing games and fun facts regard-
ing the holiday.
Whether a communication tool
or educational format, the medi-
um is a bargain for most. As a
part of the national umbrella
group for Conservative shuls,
Congregation Shaarey Zedek and
Adat Shalom Synagogue have
reaped the benefit of using
USCJ's server at no cost. Adat
