SPECIAL Aft 1 1 This CD is mesmerizing for many reasons, not the least of which is the odd circum- stances under which it was most often performed: at the Terezin concentration camp, where it was so popular it was staged 55 times. Hans Krasa, a native of Czechoslovakia, did not actually write his opera at Terezin (Theresienstadt), north of Prague, which the Nazis offered to critics as an example their wonderful treatment of Jews. But it's ob- vious why Brundibar's theme of triumph immediately ap- pealed to the concentration camp's inmates. The story focuses on a brother and sister, Joe and An- nette, who are trying to col- lect money for their sick mother by singing on the street. Then the evil organ- grinder Brundibar chases them away. With the help of a sparrow and cat and other children, Joe and Annette be- gin to sing again, and finally collect a good deal of money. Brundibar steals it, but the children get it back. At the end, the children sing a song of victory, "Since we were not fearful/Since we were not tearful/Because we marched along/Singing our happy song." Brundibar demonstrates that most remarkable of child- hood traits: the ability to see hope in the face of despair.
