VIV It's often a dog-eat-dog world out there when it comes to children's books. There are monsters and mean witches and evil spirits; you've got to wonder, what are those au- thors thinking? Isn't real life scary enough without creating creepy creatures to frighten the heck out of young children? That's why this book, Lots of Moms, is so terrific. It's a beau- tiful collection of photos ac- companied by a simple text that will leave a child thinking, "Moms are great and they love their children and my mother will take care of me." What could be better? There are mothers of every type here — Asian and Indian, African-American and white — but the photos don't have the ghastly feel of being includ- ed just for the sake of being po- litically correct. Every woman here looks like the kind of per- son a child would want to have as a mom: Loving, gentle, supportive. "It's good there are lots of moms," the book reads at the end. It's good there are books like this out there, too. HANNA'S SAIMATIll DR! SS Hanna's Sabbath Dress by Itzhak Schweiger-Dmi'e4 illus- trated by Ora Eitan, pub- lished by Simon and Schuster. -14 -* It isn't often that you come across a book that's so delightful you want to tell everyone from your rabbi to your mailman to your mother to run out and buy it. Hanna's Sabbath Dress is that rare book, and more. It's beautifully written, lovingly illustrated and, best of all, offers a power- ful message about kindness that's not condescending, preachy or sentimental. As the story begins, a little girl named Hanna waits eager- ly as her mother makes her a beautiful white dress for Shab- bat. When the dress is done, Hanna is careful to see that it stays clean. She cautions her .pet dog to stay away. Then Hanna sees a man ',it W 4> Of ft I. t.1 with a heavy burden of char- coal on his back, and she offers to help hi Ti carry it. Her dress becomes covered with soot. It is the moon who brings comfort to Hanna, sending down beams that cover her dress. The dirt transforms into light, and Hanna's dress begins to glow "like the purest silver." Soon, the whole Sabbath will radiate with beauty. Books just don't get any bet- ter than this.
