12 MONTH CERTIFICATE But when indications began to appear that high fashion would eventually go the way of the corset, Mr. Oberson scaled back his house-of-fashion operations. Inspired by the local setting, Gideon Oberson decided in 1976 to enter the ready-to-wear mar- ket and open a separate business as a swimwear designer and manufacturer. "Here in Tel Aviv, you wake up in the morning and there is sun- light and the weather and the smells [of the sea]. I feel different waking up in the morning here than a designer in Paris or Lon- don," Mr. Oberson said, noting that his turnover last year, de- spite the difficulties, was $10 mil- lion. "The sounds, smells and rhythms of Israeli life translate well into the swimwear industry." Mr. Oberson's swimwear and cover-ups are exported to 20 coun- tries in Europe and North Amer- ica, constituting 80 percent of their sales. Consumers in every country, said Gideon Oberson, have their own requirements for the perfect bathing suit. For example, in England women like bright colors — they want to be sold the fantasy of summer. French women like soft fabrics, while Germans buy suits two sizes too small with tummy control in order to feel swaddled. Americans prefer comfort, while Israeli women go for sex ap- peal. Internationally, the swimwear industry must work one year in advance to produce its product, Mr. Oberson said. One bad year can cause a spiral effect since swimsuit manufacturers depend on the earnings of one season to finance the raw materials for the next. If summer starts late, peo- ple won't rush out to buy swim- suits, and in the end the suits will be bought at sale prices later in the season. But if, Mr. Oberson said smiling, warm weather starts in February, then swim- suit designers are made in the shade. Unfortunately for Mr. Ober- son, however, the last five years have not been favorable for either the high-fashion or swimwear markets. "It hasn't been in fash- ion to be fashionable. Women spend more money on their health, diet and interior design," said Gideon Oberson, adding that awareness about the effects of the sun, which has damaged the swimwear business, led him to begin designing cover-ups. Following the difficulties of the last few years and the adjust- ments that have been made to suit the changing demands, Mr. Oberson said he now feels busi- ness is ready to take off. "Last year was very confused. It was a very good season for sales, but we had production problems, which makes it worse. Probably next year we will cover last year's [losses]. I feel like a per- son who for the last two years has had problems and is now ready to jump out and fly and do what I was doing for the past 10 years," he said.
