Based on everything I know and have
heard about the Oak Park JCC, I half-ex-
pected to be the only one in the parking lot.
To my surprise, there were other cars; however, I
did manage to find a prime spot. Scattered through-
out the building were various classes and activities
— karate, aerobics and a pick-up basketball game
in the gym.
At the club desk, a member was asking about up-
grading her membership to the health club. Obvi-
ously pleased with the prices she was quoted, she
told the desk attendant she planned to upgrade once
her general membership expired.
Inside the locker room, I was one of three women.
The other two were talking about cellulite. After
that conversation, I spent an extra 25 minutes on
the exercise bike.
There were a handful amen and women work-
ing out on the equipment. By 8:50 p.m., it was me
and whatever program airs Monday nights on NBC.
I was told that the Center's busiest times — 12 or
more people working out — tend to be on Saturday,
weekdays at 7 a.m. and at various times between
4:30 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. on weekdays.
There were few machines that I found appealing,
and I spent the majority of my workout on the bike.
The rest of the time I devoted to stretches.
Although the health club is filled with equipment
— treadmills, Cybex machines, Stairmasters, Life-
cycles, Airdynes, a Gravitron and a NordicTrack
— I prefer LifeCircuit machines which allow the
user to push a few buttons to get the appropriate
weight instead of moving a pin between various
weights.

If only my gym bag were as clean as the women's
health-club locker room. I have to say the place is
spotless. I spoke with a member who had the op-
