ing and 98 percent of the em-
ployees," she said. "I'm glad I had
the opportunity to work here, but
I'm leaving with a lot of sadness.
"I wouldn't have left on my
own, but I believe there will be
other opportunities. I feel like ifs
time to move in another direc-
tion." Ms. Kleinfeldt came to De-
troit from Memphis six years ago
to work under Dr. Morton Plot-
nick, who was the executive di-
rector at the time. In March 1995,
Dr. Plotnick left his post as head
of the JCC to focus his efforts on
fund-raising for the multimillion-
dollar agency.

Ms. Kleinfeldt took over, su-
pervising the JCC's day-to-day
operations under the title of as-
sociate executive director. Four
months later she was promoted
to executive director, but by the
end of 1995 she announced plans
to step down.
She left the top position for the
No. 2 slot last July when Mr.
Sorkin, the former director of the
JCC in Wilmington, Del., took
over.
Dr. Plotnick, who hired Ms.
Kleinfeldt as his assistant, said
given the positioning of the
agency, he is not surprised by the
decision to let her go.
"Leah Ann has done a tremen-
dous job during her time here,"
Dr. Plotnick said. "She is very ca-
pable, and I think she will be
missed in the system."
Other JCC staff deferred com-
ment to Mr. Sorkin. But some
JCC employees expressed sad-
neSs over Ms. Kleinfeldt's im-
pending departure. Some said
they were surprised a formal no-
tice was not sent to the staff, and
others said they were unaware
she was leaving. ❑
