THE LEVIS

DECEMBER

could relax and feel comfortable,"
adds Mr. Metzger.
Six months after they bought
the property, Cafe Oren opened.
Almost right away it caught on.
"I didn't expect such quick suc-
cess," admits Mr. Bergel. "Actu-
ally we were astonished."
In 1993, a Jewish Telegraph-
ic Agency report described Mr.
Bergel as "a wildly successful
restaurateur."
The success grew. More and
more people were coming to this
part of eastern Berlin: It was just
a short subway ride from the cen-
ter of western Berlin. The neigh-
borhood itself was becoming
trendy and art-oriented.
Another key factor was the
synagogue next door. After it was
renovated and then rededicated,
it quickly became a major tourist
site in Germany, attracting thou-
sands of tourists.
Many visitors to the synagogue
were delighted to find an ap-
pealing Israeli-style restaurant
next door.
Besides the tourists, the
restaurant's patrons include
many Berliners, Jewish and non-
Jewish, who come to enjoy the
tasty food, the distinctive Israeli
ambiance, the warm hospitality.
On the menu are many Mid-
dle Eastern and vegetarian dish-
es — everything from falafel to
caviar. "And everything is fresh,"
stresses Mr. Bergel. "We use no
preservatives."
Cafe Oren also features a wide
assortment of wines and beers
imported from Israel.
The partners clearly enjoy all
this. "This is a place for many na-
tionalities," says Mr. Bergel, who
greets a number of patrons by
name and often mingles with the
guests.
Whether it's a dignitary from
Israel, a tourist from the States or
a native Berliner, all find a taste
of Israel in eastern Berlin.
