rieties ... mixed deli, turkey only,
broiled chicken breast and tuna.
It is a fact that most Coney Is-
land hotdoggers in town get their
chili ready made from whole-
salers ... Classic makes its own
for the regular and jumbo all-beef
hot dogs it serves.
Soups of the day include one or
more preparations of split pea,
sweet-and-sour cabbage, potato,
minestrone, lentil and garden
vegetable ... Regular daily soups
are chicken noodle, chicken rice
and mushroom barley.
There is no charge for bever-
age refills ... and bagels are baked
daily on the premises.

Its glatt kosher beef is mostly
gotten from New York ... and Em-
pire poultry is exclusively used.
Rye and challah breads are
daily from Zeman's Bakery ... The
buns and rolls come from Cleve-
land.
Classic prepares special Lubav-
itch burgers and chili ... as well
as having a stock of special Pas
Yisroel buns (a higher standard)
that are available on request.
An independent mashgiach,
under auspices of the Vaad
Harabonim (Council of Orthodox
Rabbis) is at Classic three to six
times a day.
It is open seven days a week
... Sunday through Thursday, 11
a.m. to 9 p.m.; Friday to 2:30
p.m.; Saturday, 9 p.m. to mid-
night ... closing only for Passover,
Shabbat and major Jewish hol-
idays ... The doors remain open
on minor Jewish holidays
(Purim, Chanukah, etc.), legal
holidays and fast days (except
Yom Kippur).
People not allowed to fast for
health reasons find Classic Coney
Island a welcome haven for their
selected appetites.

Vegetarian items on the large
Classic menu reveal selections
like breaded vegetarian cutlets
and Harvest Burgers with 83 per-
cent less fat and half the calories
of ground beef.
With the help situation as
rough as it is, Steve is lucky that
his is a family operation in the
true sense of the word.
Pinny Scheiner, married to
Steve's sister Chani, is manager;
17-year-old daughter Sara is
cashier after school; 9-year-old
daughter Rakhel is sandwich
maker, cashier and computer op-
erator at the office; 14-year-old
son Yisrael is a busboy; mother
Millie is bookkeeper; Niece Riv-
ka Rabinowitz is a cashier; and
of course there's wife Yehudis'
cakes and pies.
Hot dinners from 4:30 p.m. to
8 p.m. include salad or cup of
soup, mashed potatoes or rice pi-
laf, garden vegetables and dinner
roll.
Along with a daily feature din-
ner special are roast brisket of
beef, half roast chicken, grilled
chicken breast and breaded veg-
etarian cutlets.
Typically, Jewish communities
with populations the size of met-
ropolitan Detroit have two, three
or more kosher restaurants ...
When Sara's Glatt Kosher Deli
closed in 1955, it was the only full-
service kosher restaurant here.
Classic Kosher Coney Island,
celebrating its first anniversary,
is filling a much-needed void.

Chop House, featuring relaxed
but upscale dining, has opened
on Crooks and M-59 in Rochester
Hills ... It is on the site of the for-
mer Murdock's restaurant.
New name of Ramada Inn on
Nine Mile, between Southfield
and Greenfield, is International
Hotel & Banquet Center.
After all these years, Brown-
ie's on East Jefferson is no more
... Latest venture, calling it
Brownie's On The Lake by Elaine
and Leonard Terman, didn't work
out.
It's in the Sugar Tree shopping
center on Orchard Lake Road, but
still called Harvard Row Kosher
Meat ... Owner John Katz now
also roasts chickens and turkeys
in his newly installed rotisserie
... with seasonings for the birds
