ANOTHER OPENING, ANOTHER SHOW page 73 CURTAIN CALL JULIE YOLLES ENTERTAINMENT WRITER B efore you pack up those tap shoes, like Peggy Sawyer in 42nd Street, and head to the Great White Way, you first might want to get your foot in the door, on the stage or in the wings locally. The only requirements? A lot of enthusiasm and a desire to have fun. If you're looking to be in the spotlight, watch the local papers for audition notices (or call the theater and get on its mailing list), which usually occur about six weeks prior to a show's open- ing. With the exception of St. Dun- stan's, Ridgedale Players and Village Players, all community theater groups hold open audi- tions. (St. D's, Ridgedale and Vil- lage open their auditions to the general public for musicals only.) If cast, most groups require you to become a member; member- ship dues vary from group to group but have special discounts for students, associate members and seniors. Many community theaters also have a children's group that may offer acting classes or pro- duce kid show productions. If backstage crew is your thing, a committee chair — of makeup, lights, set construction, costumes, etc. — will be happy to work with you, whether you're experienced or want to learn the ropes. That's what community theater is for.
