Licensed Specialist CLOSING THE GAP If patients wish to close the gap be- tween their front teeth, the reason for the spacing must be determined before the best method of correction can be decided upon. In the majority of cases, the cause is developmentaL As the teeth grow, there is simply more room than is needed to ac- commodate them. As a result, gaps ap- pear. Another reason that gaps might appear in the upper front teeth relates to the muscle attachment (frenum) found between the upper lip and the upper den- tal arch in the area of the two front teeth. It sometimes happens that very large or fibrous attachments may contribute to splaying of the front teeth. Once these causes are addressed, corrected, or at least recognized, the orthodontist may then close the gap by utilizing the long-term procedure of orthodontically moving the teeth together with a retainer appliance. Everybody wants a beautiful smile and everyone ought to have a healthy one. The orthodontist's goal is to achieve both for the patient. The importance of an attrac- tive smile should not be underestimated. A pleasing appearance is a vital asset to one's self-confidence. lb schedule a con- sultation, call our office at 360-7700, or see us at 8362 Richardson in Commerce Twp./West Bloomfield. Jokes that abound about the teams that didn't win the Super Bowl or World Series, even though they are the second-best teams in the world. Tears that are shed by silver- medal Olympians, who, despite awe-inspiring athletic perfor- mances, are haunted by regrets that they didn't do better. Women who are so obsessed with their appearance that they die from eating disorders. Perfection is not the same as excellence. "When we strive for excel- lence, there's a pleasure in the process because it's really achievable," says Ms. Howarth. 'We can go far with practice and dedication. Sometimes we achieve a perfect tennis serve, a perfect souffle, a perfect game. It's a moment to be savored." Perfection, on the other hand, is impossible to achieve. So kick back and accept it, say Howarth and liras, both counselors in pri- vate practice in Albuquerque, N.M. "Celebrate being adequate. Relax. Enjoy being human. Feel OK just the way you are," says Ms. Howarth. The byproducts of self-accep- tance, she says, are relaxation, self-esteem and the freedom to make new choices and enjoy life. Mattilou Catchpole of Spring- field, Ill., understands the con- cept. A nurse, small-business owner and professor emeritus in the women's studies program at the University of Illinois at Springfield, Ms. Catchpole used to run herself ragged. "I was going to be the perfect mother, the perfect wife, the perfect everything. But in the process of trying, I worked my- self to exhaustion." It was a slipped disc in the back that forced her to slow down and readjust priorities. "It finally came to me that I couldn't be perfect. With three young children, I figured if we all had clean clothes and knew what we could eat for breakfast, I could go on from there." The shift in attitude "didn't hurt my family a bit," she adds. Instead, putting goals with- in reach gave Ms. Catchpole a sense of accomplishment. "You can't like yourself if you don't like what you're doing," she said. For some, accepting limita- tions is a side effect of aging. "As you get older, you gather more data and gain wisdom. One component of wisdom is ac- cepting yourself so that you can be happy. As far as I'm con- cerned, having fun is not a con- tradiction to being responsible," Ms. Catchpole says. ❑
