Israel. He says working with an
international company has its ad-
vantages, in marketing, exposure
to the public, and available re-
sources, but it was no simple task
to convince the board of Hilton In-
ternational that there should be
a hotel in Beersheba or at the
Dead Sea.
It has also not been easy for
him to convince Hilton Interna-
tional that other Israelis should
be insthlled as general managers (1
of the new hotels. But despite the
difficulties, Oded Lifschitz has
managed to appoint Mr. Fortis in
Jerusalem and Ron Yariv as gen-
eral manager of the Beersheba
Hilton.
It is true, he says, that in the
past most general managers were
German or Swiss, but that was
because they were the people who
studied hotel management and
were willing to work all over the
world. Now, he says, people from
all over the world, including Is-
rael, are seeing hotel manage-
ment as a viable profession.
For Mr. Lifschitz, growing up
in the hotel business has served
him well. He knew from an early
age that the business is complex,
but he also had a taste of the ro-
mantic aspect to being a hotelier.
He recalls when he was 14 and
the hotel was closed for the win-
ter. His parents had gone away
and he was there with a friend.
Suddenly a woman came and
asked for a room.
He told her that the hotel was
closed, but she insisted.
He and his friend decided to
rent the room and split the mon- CJ
ey.
'Do you know what happened?
She skipped on us," he says, the
incredulity still evident in his
voice. "I had my first skipper at
the age of 14." 0

Israeli Security
Placed On Alert
Jerusalem (JTA) — Israeli offi-
cials placed the country's
security forces on high alert af-
ter receiving warnings that Is-
lamic militants were planning
an attack on a bus or shopping
mall.
The warnings prompted police
to set up roadblocks throughout
the country. At Jerusalem's
main shopping mall, border
police inspected cars and a snif-
fer dog was used to find explo-
sives.
Prime Minister Benjamin Ne-
tanyahu rebuffed criticisms that
the beefed-up security was dis-
rupting life in many cities.
"I gave a simple order: The
safety of life comes before the
quality of life," he said.
Israeli security officials said
the planned attacks were linked
to the anniversary of the 1995
