Founder of the Northern Michigan Jazz Society,
pianist Jeff Haas combines Jewish, classical, jazz
and world music themes in his work. He credits his
father, radio host and classical pianist Karl Haas,
and jazz legends John
Coltrane, Thelonius Monk,
Duke Ellington and Bill Evans
among his musical influences.
Big Band-era alto clarinetist
Marvin Kahn will join Haas as
guest artist.
The Singles Services program
is sponsored by the Michigan Board of Rabbis in
cooperation with The Jewish News and the Community
Outreach and Education Department of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit.

"Some of the people in these
places are Jewish," said Dr.
Gad-Hart. "We are serving the
Jewish community by doing
this. And what we've found
from the school programs and
birthday party program is that
not only are we doing a mitz-
vah, but we are teaching peo-
ple who never knew Jews
before what it is like to be a
Jew. We get a nice bit of com-
munal feedback from that.
Many have never met a Jew
before in their lives."
A message that Dr. Gad-
Harf and Caring Community
has learned is that for every
one person who comes to a
group at Temple Israel, there
are three or four in need who
feel embarrassed and don't
come."
Caring Community had to
cancel a group for people who
lost pregnancies, even though
the temple received numerous
calls. No one came, Dr. Gad-
Harf thinks, because of em-
barrassment.
The temple will be starting
a support group for people
with AIDS in conjunction with
Jewish Family Service. It is
also putting together a group
for mothers of children with
AIDS.
There are groups for many
people. But there are some
days when even Renee Simon
doesn't feel like attending.
"There is a side of me that
doesn't see me being in that
group," she said. "I've met a
couple of people there whom
I've become close friends with.
But I had a lot of reluctance at
first going to the group, be-
cause a lot of people didn't
know about my car accident. I
have since gotten comfortable
and outgoing."
"I believe in you kid."
That wasn't from a lapel
button.
It came from Edie Pernick.
She meant it.
The people at the disabili-
ties meeting. They knew she
understood.
They'll come back again. ❑
