haron Yekutiel, a Shas
(Sephardi Orthodox) par-
ty activist in the south
Tel Aviv neighborhood of
Kfar Shalem, had just unlocked
the little YosefHaTzaddik shul
to let in the Shabbat morning
minyan.
"Come back in the late after-
noon, around 3:30, and you'll see
the street filled with Jews going
to synagogue," he said. On this
one block of Lehi Street, there
are three other shuls besides
Yosef HaTzaddik.
Central Tel Aviv's Sheinkin
Street, with its sidewalk restau-
rant-pubs and avant-garde fash-
ion boutiques, is known as the
nerve center of Israeli bohemia.
But on the sidestreets lives a
substantial community of
Ashkenazi Haredim.
Overlooking a park in the
middle of Sheinkin is Tel Aviv's
Chabad Center, with its big, yel-
low sign that reads, "Prepare for
the coming of the Messiah."
against any attempt to shut
down the city's commercial and
cultural activities on Shabbat.
But there is another, lesser-
known, "holy" Tel Aviv. Most es-
timates have it that while the
Orthodox make up a little less
than 10 percent of the city's pop-
ulation, traditional Jews —
those who maintain at least
some regular religious obser-
vance such as Friday night kid-
dush — represent another 30
percent or so. Among these peo-
ple, the "cry of Shabbat" is heard
with growing sympathy.
Holy Tel Aviv is located main-
ly on the southside, which is dot-
ted with poor Sephardi
neighborhoods. As in all such ar-
eas of the country, south Tel
Aviv has experienced a tremen-
dous wave of ba'alei teshuva, or
returnees to religion.
This is mainly due to the tire-
less proselytizing of Shas. Op-
erating a vast network of
charities and religious schools,

Rabbi Joseph Gerlitzky, di-
rector of the Chabad Center, es-
timates that there are 500 shuls
in this city of 360,000 residents.
On nearby Allenby Street
stands Tel Aviv's Great Syna-
gogue; on Shabbat, the streets
next to the synagogue are closed
to traffic.
When thousands of Haredim,
mainly from Jerusalem, bussed
into the Tel Aviv Fairgrounds
recently to send up the "cry of
Shabbat" for this city's Jewish
soul, it was seen as an instance
of when worlds collide — reli-
gious Jerusalem attempting an
invasion of secular Tel Aviv.
"Jerusalem is the holy city,
Tel Aviv is the free city," said Tel
Aviv Mayor Roni Milo, warning
that the locals would rise up
it's now the third largest politi-
cal party in the Knesset.
"We start the children out
when they're young," Mr. Yeku-
tiel said. "First they go to our
kindergartens, then our Talmud
Torahs, then our yeshiva high
schools."
Of course the parents must
consent, but Mr. Yekutiel says
this is never a problem.
"All the parents were raised
in religious homes, and they all
know that our way is the true
way," he continued. "If they're
not observant themselves, it's
not because they don't believe,
but only because they say it's too
hard for them."

member and head of the small
