Dr. Elconin

national will have its December luncheon
meeting at noon Wednesday, Dec. 11, at
Temple Emanu-EL
The guest speaker will be Dr. Lisa B. Elconin, who
will speak on "Communicating With Your Doctor"
and other related items of interest to women.
Dr. Elconin is an internal medicine physician who
has her office in Farmington with three other women
doctors; they are
all associated with
Sinai Hospital.
The luncheon
will be hosted by
the Bowlers,
Bridge and Cur-
rent TR.sues groups.

Kaufman Named
President Of ZOA

was elected president
of Metro Detroit ZOA,
succeeding George P.
Mann, who was named chair-
man of the Executive Com-
mittee.
Elections of ZOA officers
and Board of Directors took
place at the organization's
annual meeting. Elected as
vice presidents were: Mrs.
Morris (Beverly) Baker, Anne
Brand, Dr. Lillian Hurwitz,
Nathan Lipson and Dr. Leon
H. Warshay. Named as sec-
retary was Yvette Mandell;
as treasurer, Dr. Lester Zeff.
Ezekiel Leikin was re-elect-
ed executive vice president.
Sidney Silverman, a former
national president of ZOA,
served as chairman of the
Nominations Committee ; and
Rabbi Herbert Yoskowitz of
Congregation Beth Achim was
the installing officer.

tributor to major Jewish and
Israeli causes, Dr. Kaufman
endowed a medical clinic in
Beit Hagia, located in the
southern hills of Hebron and
a second clinic to be built in
the Samaria community of
Einay.

He is a member of Federa-
tion's executive committee and
board of governors.
Mr. Berry co-chaired the
Federation/Synagogue Task Force and
serves on the board of United Jewish
Foundation. Mrs. Greenberg sits on
Federation's board of governors and
the Allied Jewish Campaign major
gifts event committee.
A former Detroit lay leader and
teacher of Hebrew and special edu-
cation, Mrs. Lapides has returned to
Detroit after working for the Jewish
United Fund of Chicago and United
Jewish Appeal Midwest Region for 19
years.

Dr. Lisa Elconin

Tans for the 100th anniversary of the
organized Jewish community of De-
troit are under way with the ap-
pointment of Michael Maddin as
chairman of the 1998-99 centennial cele-
bration.
Harold Berry and Carolyn Greenberg will
co-chair the event, which commemorates
the founding in 1899 of the United Jewish
Charities (UJC), predecessor organization
of the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit. The UJC, today known as the Unit-
ed Jewish Foundation, works with Federa-
tion in development of the financial
resources of the Jewish community.
Sissi Lapides has been named staff coor-
dinator of the centennial celebration, which
will be launched in fall 1998 and run
through the following spring. Communi-
ty-wide events will range from a major con-
cert and an archival project to educational
and cultural activities sponsored by syna-
