daism, but are unwilling to com-
mit themselves to an Orthodox
way of life, a requirement for an
Orthodox conversion."
And six days later, the paper
called on the religious parties to
be more vigorous in their opposi-
tion to the extremists within their
ranks who have threatened to
murder the Chief Justice of the
Supreme Court, non-Orthodox
rabbis and, most recently, TV en-
tertainer Yair Lapid (for refusing
to remove sketches satirizing the
weekly Torah portion from his
show).
Maybe a few religious readers
will, in anger, stop purchasing the
Post — just as some left-wingers
did when it moved to the right
some years ago. But most of those
who buy it do so because it is the
only newspaper in English. These
"no alternative" readers include
most diplomats and foreign cor-
respondents, who didn't like or
trust Mr. Bar-Ian's Post. They'll
likely be more favorably disposed
to Mr. Barak's version.

Jeff Barak is usually very soft-spo-
ken and diplomatic. But he can be
pushed too far.
This happened recently when
a reporter from the Jerusalem
weekly Kol Ha'ir suggested that
after only 12 years in the country,
Mr. Barak might not be suffi-
ciently well-acquainted with life
here to be the editor of an Israeli
paper.
That wasn't the case, Mr.
Barak said. And generally speak-
ing, he added, Israeli papers aren't
fair in their treatment of immi-
grants from Western countries.
'Dore Gold," he declared, "is a case
in point. They give the prime min-
ister's adviser on foreign affairs a
hard time because he came from
the United States; they call him
`a foreign transplant' and other
such things. I just can't under-
stand," Mr. Barak went on.
"How is it possible in this coun-
try," he added, "where we talk all
the time about aliya, to say that
some people are not qualified to
hold certain positions just because
they came from particular coun-
tries?
"It sounds to me like racism.
Moreover, I don't think that pa-
pers like Yediot Ahronot would
dare to write such things about
someone who had come from Mo-
rocco."

Herzog's Son
Took Bribes?

Jerusalem (JTA) — Arrest war-
rants have been issued In France
against Yoel Herzog, son of for-
mer Israeli President Chaim
Herzog, and his partner Nissim

Goan for allegedly offering bribes
in exchange for obtaining build-
ing permits for a hotel they own ,-
in Cannes.
In a case widely reported in
the French media, the hotel man-
ager allegedly offered the mayor
of Cannes $300,000 on behalf of
the two, in exchange for permits
to expand the casino in the hotel.

Survey Reveals
Hate For Arabs

Jerusalem (JTA) — More than 35
percent of Israeli youths said they
hate Arabs, according to a survey
by the Carmel Center for Social
Research.
Two-thirds of the young people
surveyed said they do not believe
that Arabs should be given equal
rights in the Jewish state.
The poll of about 3,700 Jewish (-
and Arab high school students
was conducted in 1994 on behalf
of the Israeli Education Ministry.
The wide-ranging survey also
asked students about their con-
ceptions of leadership as well as
their motivation to serve in the
army.
About 50 percent of the Jewish
youths polled said they were will-
ing to serve in combat units in the
army, compared with 63 percent
in 1988.
Particularly low motivation lev-
els were found among secular
Jewish youths; 59 percent of those
from kibbutzim said they were
willing to serve in combat units,
a 20 percent drop from 1988.
Meanwhile, in the religious
camp, motivation levels were
higher. Almost 90 percent of
youths from religious kibbutzim,
85 percent from Jewish settle-
ments and 68 percent from reli-
gious seminaries said they would
serve in combat units.
Fully 43 percent of the Jewish
youths polled said Israeli Arabs
should be allowed to serve in the
Israel Defense Force.
Some 75 percent of Israeli Arab
youth polled said they were ready
to serve in some kind of national
service.

Violations Of
Self-Rule Accords?

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli
army's coordinator of activities in
the territories has presented a
key Knesset committee with a
Palestinian list of alleged Israeli
violations of the self-rule accords.
In his appearance before the
Knesset Foreign Affairs and De-
fense Committee, Maj. Gen. Oren
Shahor said the 34-point list in-
cluded complaints about the long
delay in the Israel Defense Force
redeployment in Hebron.
The Palestinians also charged
that Israel had failed to open a
safe passage route for Arabs tray-
