at very high speeds, explains
L_Dror Langer, the company's
deputy CEO for research and de-
velopment.
The system also records the
rate of acceleration and braking.
The camera can operate even in
very poor light and the driver
committing the violation is to-
tally unaware that he is being
photographed.
The system cannot be detect-
99d with radar equipment.
The information is transmit-
ted by rapid data communication
to the data processing center,
where a report or warning letter
is issued. The system can process
about 500 reports a day, com-
pared with 10 daily reports pro-
duced by a regular laser system.
Besides considerably im-
proving traffic-control quality,
the Marom also provides solu-
tions to the chronic manpower
shortage that plagues most traf-
fic-enforcement departments
worldwide. Unlike the radar
system, which requires at least
two policemen, the Marom re-
quires no human presence at
all.
One month after being tested
in Netanya last winter, car acci-
dents there dropped 10 percent.
In the second month, accidents
declined by 38 percent, and the
following month by 45 percent.
In addition, the number of
crash victims who were injured
or killed declined by 69 percent,
compared with a 32 percent rise
recorded at the same time in 10
other cities.
A similar experiment con-
1— ducted in April in Petah Tikva
indicated a 28 percent decline in
accidents in the first month.
Since 1948, Israel has suffered
more than 500,000 traffic acci-
dents, in which 19,000 people
were killed. Last year alone
there were over 21,000 accidents
in which 550 people were killed.
According to Kedmi the num-
ber of injuries can be sig-
nificantly reduced through im-
proved law enforcement.
Implementing Marom on a
national scale, at an overall cost
of $10 million a year, would
dramatically reduce the number
of road-accident fatalities and in-
juries.
For now, six such systems op-
erate in the Israel, at a cost of
$100,000 apiece. Fifteen addi-
tional sets were sold to the police
forces in Argentina, Costa Rica
and Chile.
DSS recently signed a land-
mark contract with the French
electronics firm Sagem, which
commits the French company to
acquire 60 Marom systems over
two years in exchange for per-
mission to market the company's
products in France, Germany
and Belgium. The company's
employees believe they can at-
tain an annual sales rate of 1,000
sets in Europe. E
