Russian Aide
Causes Furor

Moscow (JTA) — A furor has
erupted there over reports that
one of Russia's top security offi-
cials has Israeli citizenship.
Two Moscow newspapers
reported that Jewish business
tycoon Boris Berezovsky received
Israeli citizenship during a visit
to the Jewish state three years
ago.
Mr. Berezovsky, who in the ear-
ly 1990s made a fortune in the au-
tomobile business, was appointed
deputy secretary of Russia's Na-
tional Security Council recently.
His appointment came after
Russian President Boris Yeltsin
fired former National Security
Chief Alexander Lebed and re-
placed him with Ivan Rybkin, for-
mer speaker of the Duma, the
lower house of Parliament.
Mr. Berezovsky, 50, is also
chairman of Russian public tele-
vision, a post that makes him one
of the most influential media fig-
ures there.
Unlike other wealthy Russian
Jewish entrepreneurs, he has nev-
er been involved in organized Jew-
ish life.
In the wake of the reports, Mr.
Berezovsky denied that he had
citizenship and said he would
sue the newspapers for libel.
The decision to appoint Mr.
Berezovsky to the security coun-
cil prompted outrage from some
members of the Russian Parlia-
ment, including Duma Speaker
Gennady Seleznyov and liberal
economist Grigory Yavlinsky.
Many of his critics charged that
Mr. Berezovsky had no previous
experience as a politician and had
been picked for the key post be-
cause of his influence in the corri-
dors of power.
Russia's four leading television
channels took Mr. Berezovsky's
side. One popular television host
called the two newspaper articles
anti-Semitic.
Leading members of the Jew-
ish community defended Mr.
Berezovsky.
"Russian laws do not ban dual
citizenship," said Mikhail Chien-
ov, president of the Wad, the Jew-
ish confederation of Russia. "The
fact of dual citizenship cannot
serve as a ground for career limi-
tations."

Holocaust Denier
Loses Visa Bid

Sydney, Australia (JTA) — Aus-
tralia's immigration minister has
turned down a visa request from
Holocaust denier David Irving.
Announcing his decision at a
news conference, Philip Ruddock,
immigration and multicultural af-
fairs minister, said, "All applicants
for visas to Australia must be as-
sessed for good character."

Citing Mr. Irving's legal diffi-
culties in Germany, Canada and
Great Britain, Mr. Ruddock said,
"Taken together, they reveal a
consistent pattern of behavior
that led me to conclude that Mr.
Irving is not a person of good
character."
Mr. Ruddock added that his de-
cision "has nothing to do with no-
tions of free speech. Mr. Irving's
views and writings are well-
known and remain readily avail-
able in Australia."
The Jewish community here
welcomed Mr. Ruddock's decision.
Diane Shteinman, president of
the Executive Council of Aus-
tralian Jewry, expressed relief
that the "elderly Holocaust sur-
vivors of our community will not
be subject to further trauma and
aggravation," which would be
caused by Mr. Irving's presence
here.
Mr. Irving announced from
London that he would appeal the
decision.
He said his enemies around the
world had spread misinformation
to keep him out of Australia.
He also claimed that only 1 mil-
lion Jews were killed in World
War II and that Holocaust sur-
vivors were all victims of faulty
memory.

Violinist's Mother
Dead At 104

San Francisco — Marutha
Menuhin's life spanned conti-
nents and more than a century.
Born in Russia to a kosher butch-
er, she lived in Palestine, New
York and Petaluma before set-
tling in San Francisco.
Last week, the mother of
acclaimed violinist and conduc-
tor Yehudi Menuhin died in
Los Gatos at 104 after a short ill-
ness. Lionel Rolfe, son of Yehu-
di's younger sister Yaltah,
recalls his grandmother as "a
very, very strong-willed woman.
My mother always said that if
Marutha had stayed in Israel,
Golda Meir wouldn't have had a
chance."
Marutha Menuhin, who at-
tended the Herzliya Gymnasium
in Tel Aviv, taught piano while
living in Palestine. She passed
her love of music on not only to
Yehudi but to daughters Yaltah
and Hephzibah, accomplished pi-
anists who appeared with their
brother in chamber music recitals
and concert tours.
But it was Yehudi Menuhin
who rose to international star-
dom.
A child prodigy who appeared
with the San Francisco Sympho-
ny when he was 8, he is regard-
ed as one of the greatest violinists
of the 20th century. Among the
composers who wrote especially
for Yehudi Menuhin were Ernest
Bloch, Bela Bartok and Sir
William Walton.
