Lahser & Telegraph • Southfield JN —1 354-3700 New York (JTA) — The right- wing mayor of the southern French town of Toulon has cre- ated an uproar by refusing - to hon- or Jewish writer Marek Halter at the local book fair. Mayor Jean-Marie Le Cheval- lier of the National Front Party rejected fair organizers' recom- mendation that Mr. Halter be honored with a literary prize at the three-day fair. Mr. Chevallier, who called the fair a "celebration of the liberty of books," dismissed the recom- mendation to honor Mr. Halter as "inopportune." Mr. Chevallier said fair orga- nizers were attempting to em- barrass the National Front. Instead, he said the award should be presented to former ac- tress Bridget Bardot, whose memoirs have topped the French best-seller lists for months. In the wake of widespread crit- icisms of Mr. Chevallier, Ms. Bar- dot did not attend the award ceremony. The criticisms also prompted nu- merous participants to absent themselves from the fair. A paral- lel fair was held in a nearby village. Ms. Bardot's husband, Bernard D'Ormale, is a member of the Na- tional Front, which espouses a na- tionalist, anti-immigrant agenda. The party's leader, Jean-Marie Le Pen, has frequently made anti- Semitic and racist statements, and Mr. Chevallier is regarded as a close friend and confidant of his. Mr. Chevallier's denial of the award to Mr. Halter prompted a fresh round of accusations that the Front is anti-Semitic. At a meeting to discuss the is- sue, Mr. Halter was joined by French Culture Minister Philippe Douste-Blazy, other culture min- isters and several leading writers. Mr. Halter, who family es- caped the Warsaw ghetto in 1941, told reporters that this was the first time he had felt unwelcome as a Jew in France. Mr. Douste-Blazy said the Na- tional Front was engaged in a "general offensive" against cul- ture and called for a fight against the party "without mercy, with- out respite, without compromise." Teachers Gifts Are Phones Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's 130,000 schoolteachers will be thanked for their efforts this year with cellular phones instead of apples.
