Mr. Berenbaum will resign as director of the Research Institute of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C., to assume his new position in Janu- ary in Los Angeles. The Shoah Foundation was es- tablished by Steven Spielberg, fol- lowing the success of his film Schindler's List, to videotape and preserve the testimony and expe- riences of Holocaust survivors around the world. More than 23,000 survivors in 28 countries have been inter- viewed. The foundation aims to in- terview 50,000 survivors by the end of 1997. Mr. Spielberg praised Mr. I Berenbaum's background as a scholar and said he would spear- head "the educational distribution of the archive and further the foun- dation's mission over the next few critical years." Mr. Berenbaum said he also would be involved in continuing development of tolerance and Holocaust studies curricula. In a phone interview, Mr. Berenbaum responded to occa- sional criticism that the Shoah foundation, thanks to Mr. Spiel- berg's financial backing, tended to stifle the work of institutions en- gaged for many years in inter- views of survivors. Other Holocaust projects, he said, "are all related to each oth- er. We are colleagues, not com- petitors." Five of the leading Holocaust research centers have been desig- nated as repositories for the testi- monies being taped by the Foundation. They are Yad Vashem in Jerusalem, the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, the Simon Wiesenthal Center in Los Angeles, the Fortunoff Video Archive at Yale University, and the Museum of Jewish Heritage in New York. Some critics of Mr. Spielberg's effort have questioned whether the Shoah Foundation's interviewers possessed the historical back- ground and scholarly depth for their sensitive work. 'That's one reason Steven Spiel- berg turned to me," said Mr. Berenbaum, who has written 11 books on different aspects of the Holocaust and is an adjunct pro- fessor of theology at Georgetown University. Mr. Berenbaum, 51, was a key figure in the creation of the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum as its first project director. Early last year, he was a candidate to serve as the museum's overall director, but was not selected by the muse- um's executive committee. 10% F F TOTAL BILL High-quality article reprints can help your company in many ways: DINE IN OR CARRYOUT Not good with any other offer 1 coupon per table • with coupon Exp 12/20/96 39450 14 Mi le Rd. corner of Haggerty in the Newberry Square Plaza (810) 960-7666 • Increased EXPOSURE for your product or service Original location: 29215 5 Mile Rd at Middlebelt - Livonia r SZECHUAN " EMPIRE GARDEN I TOTAL BI L (Excludes Lu 0°/ 0 OFF (Formerly Peking Garden) 1 Psipelli Expires 12-26-96 CARRYOUT WE NOW SERVE HOURS: MON.-THURS. 11 a.m.-10:30 p.m. FRI. & SAT. 11 a.m.-11 p.m. SUN. 12 Noon-10 p.m. CHICKEN WON TON SOUP (NO PORK!)
