The Magic Dreidels by Eric A.
Kimmel; Holiday House, $15.95.
A goblin gives Jacob magic drei-
dels that produce latkes and
Chanukah gelt. Jacob shares the
wealth with the entire town. The
illustrations by Katya Krenina are
rich and colorful. For ages 4-8.
Milk and Honey by Jane Yolen;
Putnam & Grosset, $21.95. Many
of the Jewish holidays are includ-
ed in this anthology, which con-
tains explanations, poems,
folktales and traditional songs.
The author's books have won the
National Jewish Book award. For
ages 7-10.
The Trees of the Dancing Goats
by Patricia Polacco; Simon Schus-
ter, $16. This delightful story takes
place on a farm in Union City,
Mich. The author writes about her
own experiences in a town where
her family is the only one cele-
brating Chanukah. The family
proves that miracles do happen
around Chanukah, as they share
the holiday spirit with the neigh-
bors who are ill with scarlet fever.
While the Candles Burn: Eight
Stories for Hanukkah by Barbara
Diamon Goldin; Viking, $15.99.
Each story por trays the themes of
Chanukah: religious freedom,
commitment, faith, courage, char-
ity, rededication, lights and mira-
cles. This book emphasizes why
Jews celebrate Chanukah. The
book also has a story about hon-
oring women during the holiday.
The Wonder Child & Other
Jewish Fairy Tales by Howard
Schwartz; HarperCollins, $16.95.
Schwartz retells some of the best
examples of Jewish folklore from
around the world in this collection
of stories. "The Wonder Child" is
a Jewish tale from Egypt about a
lovely Jewish girl and an evil
queen. For ages 8 and older.
The Ugly Menorah by Marissa
Moss; Farrar, Straus & Giroux,
$14. Rachel celebrates her first
Chanukah since her grandpa died.
The house feels empty and the
menorah doesn't shine. In gentle
words and illustrations, Grandpa
seems to fill the house as the
menorah is lit. For ages 5-8.
