month stint in Detroit before be-
coming publisher in Vancouver.
"Andrew's experience in Detroit
gave him an opportunity to
demonstrate many of the skills
that took full flower when he be-
came publisher in Vancouver,"
said Arthur M. Horwitz, publish-
er of the Detroit Jewish News. "He
honed his already keen sense of
the role a Jewish newspaper can
play in building community.
"In his role as publisher of the
Baltimore Jewish Times, contin-
ued Mr. Horwitz, "Andrew will be
able to positively influence the di-
rection of the Jewish News and
the other publications in the Wa-
terspout group."
Mr. Buerger will turn over the
reins of the Jewish Bulletin to ad-
vertising and marketing director
Rick Wolk. In just over 18 months
operating the Canadian weekly,
the duo doubled paid circulation
to 5,000 and raised revenues 20
percent. Staffing increased 60 per-
cent and advertising pages grew
eight-fold.
"But beyond the business suc-
cess, Andrew made a significant
impact on our community," said
Drew Staffenberg, executive di-
rector of the Jewish Federation of
Greater Vancouver. "He turned a
private business stint into a com-
munity venture."
As a youth, Mr. Buerger
worked a succession of summer
jobs, internships and full-time po-
sitions that "somehow all relat-
ed to the publishing industry,"
said his mother, Ronnie Buerger.
"Andrew had a deep-seated desire
to do what Chuck did. That he is
now ready to become Baltimore's
publisher is not a surprise. It's the
timing of it that is." ❑
