It is probably the only resort in
the world whose founder was
nominated for a Nobel Peace
Prize. In 1913, the then-secre-
tary of state, Elihu Root, pro-
posed the name of Albert Smiley,
co-founder of the Monhonk
Mountain House, in up-state
New York near New Paltz, for
that award.
Mr. Smiley died at age 84
without knowing how close he
had come to receiving world ac-
claim for his role in fostering
philanthropic endeavors, aiding
North American Indian com-
munities and organizing a series
of conferences designed to facil-
itate labor-management negoti-
ations.
This extraordinary legacy is
still very much alive in the ma-
jestic resort retreat called Mon-
honk, which Mr. Smiley and his
twin brother Alfred acquired in
1869 on a promontory of the
Shawangunk mountain range
90 miles north of New York City.
In that year, the brothers,
smitten by what they saw on the
mountain top, bought 30 acres
of forest an a topographical sur-
face which contained precipitous
crags and pristine quartz rock
formations. Situated 2,000 feet
above sea level, the site was a
crazy quilt of lichens and white
stone, surrounded by pine, hem-
lock and chestnut trees.
In the center of this was a
glacial lake; at its lowest point
it is 60 feet deep and crystal
clear.
One hundred and twenty-
seven years later, Monhonk
Mountain House preserves the
actualized dream of the Smiley
brothers who sought to recon-
struct on that New York ground
a retreat which would reflect the
Quaker values that they trea-
sured — sobriety, tranquility of
spirit and serenity of soul.
Astonishingly, more than a
century later, Mr. Smiley's de-
scendants have succeeded in
conserving the best of their an-
cestor's resort scenario while
adding only those technological
advances which dovetail with
the founders' original aims.
The secret to the Monhonk's
longevity is a combination of
dedicated management skills
and the advantages of a natur-
al preserve that cannot be repli-
cated anywhere in the world.
Monhonk Mountain House
marries rustic simplicity to mod-
ern efficiency, the 250-room
house is a marvel of turreted
wood and stone whose architec-
tural design makes it look as if
it is reaching skyward. ❑
