Ira Kaufman established a legacy of
service, compassion and trust with
the Detroit Jewish community which
remains unsurpassed.

JOSEPHINE CHANEY, 90, of
Warren, died Nov. 23.
Mrs. Chaney is survived by
her daughters and sons-in-law,
Marylou and Archie Lester of
Warren, Regina and Petr Graff
of Brookville, Md.; grandchil-
dren, Debbie and Larry Cipa,
Mark and Linda Lester, David
and Kathy Lester; great-grand-
children, Michael, Craig and
Amy Cipa and Ryan Lester,
brothers and sister-in-law, Ed-
ward Zajac, Fred and Sabina Za-
jac; sisters, Jennie Nevotne, Ida
Detmer. She was the beloved
wife of the late David.

BESSIE GOLDBERG, 90, of
Ann Arbor, died Nov. 22. Mrs.
Goldberg was a member of
Workmen's Circle and Women's
American ORT.
She is survived by her hus-
band, Samuel N.; daughters and
sons-in-law, Jeannette and
David of Ann Arbor, Barbara
and David Strom of San Diego;
grandchildren, Susan Goldberg
and Gary Blonston, Debora
Goldberg, Jennifer Iden-Liss and
John Liss, Jessica Iden; brother
and sister-in-law, Lewis and
Gertrude Honigman of Oak
Park. Mrs. Goldberg was the lov-
ing mother of the late Ethel
Goldberg.

HIV/AIDS SUPPORT GROUPS AND SERVICES

The Jewish Family Service is now forming an HIV/AIDS
Support Group for HIV-positive Jewish men and women.
JFS also offers these services relating to HN/AIDS:
• The Mother to Mother program. This community outreach and
educational program has mothers ofJewish men and women
with HIV/AIDS speak to your organization about their experi
ences. This is a wonderful opportunity to join
others to discuss living with and learning about HIV/AIDS.
• Bi-weekly Support Group for Family members of Persons with
HIV/AIDS -
• Individual, Family and Group Counseling
• Transportation to Medical and Social Service appointments"
These programs are free of charge, thanks to the generous grants
of the 'Ryan White CA.R.E. Act Title I and the Michigan AIDS
Fund.

Southfield, died Nov. 25. Mrs.
Goldberg was a secretary at Con-
gregation Adat Shalom for 32
years. She was also a member of
B'nai B'rith.
Mrs. Goldberg is survived by
her son and daughter-in-law,
Norbert and Marlene of South-
field; daughter and son-in-law,
Loretta and Dr. Allan Birk of
West Bloomfield; grandchildren,
'uric and Mari Goldberg, Jan and
Steven Levin, Michael Birk, Neil
Birk; great-granddaughter,
Amanda Goldberg. Mrs. Gold-
berg was the beloved wife of the
late Samuel Goldberg and the
loving grandmother of the late
Glenn Goldberg.

BENJAMIN GOLDSTEIN, 88,

of Melbourne, Fla., died Nov. 21.
Mr. Goldstein was a furniture
executive.

He is survived by his daugh-

Beverly and Arnold Lantor of
Bloomfield Hills; grandchildren,
Barry and Judy and Mark
Schneider, Carol and Greg Or-
sak, Bonnie, Alyssa and Jennifer

Mr. Goldstein was the beloved
husband of the late Louise Gold-
stein.

ELEANOR JACOB HART-
MAN, 81, of Farmington Hills,

died Nov. 19.
Mrs. Hartman is survived by
her sons and daughter-in-law,
Dr. John and Julia of Ann Arbor,
James of Farmington Hills;
grandchildren, Michelle, Aman-
da, Robert Hartman; brother
and sister-in-law, Richard and
Pat Jacob of Dayton, Ohio; sis-
ter-in-law, Reva Jocob. She was
the loving sister of the late
Robert Jacob, the late Adele
Goldberg, the late Rolla Doner
and the dear sister-in-law of the
late Irving Goldberg and Brod
Doner.

Herbert Zimmerman of South-

Mitchell and Marie Greenbaum;

Bloomfield Hills. Mrs. Hertzberg
was the beloved wife of the late

SYLVIA JAFFE, 91, of South-
field, died Nov. 20. Mrs. Jaffe
served as president ofJewish
Family Service from 1964-1966
and was a board member of Fed-
eration Apartments as well as
serving on the Federation Bud-
get Committee and Women's Di-
vision. She served on the
Woman's Committee of United

Community Services as well as
being a board member, was past
board member of JCC, a mem-
ber of Hadassah and the Nation-
al Council ofJewish Women.
Mrs. Jaffe was also a past vice
president of South Oakland
United Community Service and
a past chairman (1953) on the
committee ofJewish Scholar-
ships.
She is survived by her daugh-
ter, Irene Siegel of Southfield;
daughter-in-law, Lee Jaffe;
grandchildren, Carolyn Siegel,
Jonathan Katov and Debra Pry-
or, David Jaffe and Erica Peres-
man, Ruth Jaffe and Paul
Horowitz; four great-grandchil-
dren; brother, Lawrence
Schwartz of Joliet, Ill.; sister and
brother-in-law, Flora and Dr.
James Gold of Ill. Mrs. Jaffe was
the beloved wife of the late Ben-
jamin Jaffe and the loving moth-
er of the late Miles Jaffe. Inter-
ment at Beth El Memorial Park.

ALLEN A. KAFTAN, 87, of

Beverly Hills, died Nov. 24. For
50 years, Mr. Kaftan was a phar-
macist and owner of Cass Plaza
Pharmacy in Detroit and Kaftan
Pharmacy in St. Clair Shores.
He was also president of Aescu-
lapians for the last 10 years, a
member of Temple Israel and a
graduate of Wayne State Uni-
versity School of Pharmacy.
• He is survived by his sons and
daughters-in-law, Dr. Sheldon
and Mari of West Bloomfield,
Melvin and Carole of Bloomfield
Hills; grandchildren, Susan and
David Deutsch, Linda and
Daniel Lutz, Karen and
Matthew Berns, Jeffrey Kaftan,
Lori Kaftan and Marc Barron;
great-grandchildren, Daniel and
Jonathan Deutsch, Jacob Lutz;
sister and brother-in-law,
Blanche and Henry Littman.

band of the late Gloria Kaftan.

BriTE KARP, 72, of West

Bloomfield, died Nov. 19. Mrs.
Karp was a member of Women's
American ORT.
She is survived by her sons,
Kenneth of Salem, Ore., Gary of
San Francisco; grandchildren,
Carolynn and Stacey Karp;
brother and sister-in-law, Glen
and Iris Goldstrom of Oak Park;
sister and brother-in-law, Sylvia
and Emanuel Baker of West
Bloomfield; daughter-in-law and
son-in-law, Marjorie Karp-Op-
perer and Maurice Opperer.
