"He sat me down and started
talking about the school," Mr.
Isakow said. "Then he insisted I
visit. It was a total revelation for
me to see the positive way the
kids interact with the teachers.
When I was there something
made me realize this was some-
thing very special that needs to
be preserved."
What Mr. Isakow saw was a
school on its way up. But, the
turnaround didn't happen
overnight. Various rabbis in the
community selected a fresh group
of community members to try
and reverse the school's ill-fated
direction. One of the first things
the new board did was raise $1
million earmarked for a teachers
