It was a total revelation for me to see the positive way the kids interact with the teachers. When I was there something made me realize this was some- thing very special that needs to be preserved." What Mr. Isakow saw was a school on its way up. But, the turnaround didn't happen overnight. Various rabbis in the community selected a fresh group of community members to try and reverse the school's ill-fated direction. One of the first things the new board did was raise $1 million earmarked for a teachers ber, redid the boys school on a vol- unteer basis. As the school began to turn around, faith was restored, as is evident in enrollment numbers. "Years ago, there was proba- bly the perception that our secu- lar education was second rate," said Susan Colbert, the secular studies principal at the boys school. "Because of the changes that were implemented and the spirit of unity throughout the process, it has enabled our sec- ular department to excel." The school operates on a $3 million budget but just over a third comes from tuition.
