CD LET US HELP YOU PLAN YOUR HOLIDAY PARTY AT OUR RESTAURANT OR IN OUR BEAUTIFUL NEXT DOOR BANQUET CENTER thinly sliced Granny Smith apples in a rich batter, topped with cus- tard, baked and drizzled with hot caramel sauce. Biggest dining seller at Dia- mond Jim Brady's in Novi is the Chicken Isabella (breast sauteed with lemon, herbs, green onion and Shiitakes. Served over parpadelle). Diamond Jim Brady's goes through about 200 pounds of chicken a week ... and most of it is for the Isabella. Top fish sellers are the Atlantic salmon (fillet lightly coated with Dijon and an herb crust, served with roasted romas, caramelized garlic enhanced Basmati, pea pods and a capered beurre blanc) ... and sea scallops (seared golden and presented with saffron risotto, steamed spinach and pesto vinai- grette). Another whitefish that rims as a special at least once a week is that with a tomato vodka sauce ... Whitefish never had it so good! And the trout a la Brady has many folks coming back ... Lake trout fillet topped with crumbled blue cheese, chopped scallions and onions and baked. Mary's own variations on nu- merous food items are much cred- it to her highly regarded culinary gift. It was recognized with her first competition in 1990, representing Schoolcraft College at a culinary salon in which she was awarded a gold medal for best of show. It is also enviable that many of Mary and Tom's employees at Di- amond Jim Brady's when it was in 3000 Prudential Town Center are still with them in Novi. Their present location is open seven days ... Mondays through Thursdays, 11:30 p.m. to 11 p.m.; Fridays and Saturdays, 11:30 a.m. to midnight; Sundays, 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Much of the Seven Mile Dia- mond Jim Brady's is in the Novi ambiance ... Including a photo of Tom's parents, Jim and Grace Brady, and so many antique ar- tifacts for which Jim was noted ... He also owned the antique shop next door to the Seven Mile restau- rant locale and a goodly amount that greeted folks there is still in Novi ... Like the wood-burning stove behind the bar, pitchers on a plate rail used in days of yester- years instead of a china cabinet, the sign with Diamond Jim Brady's famous saying, "Them That Has Them Wears Them," etc. And to clear up an otherwise thought from the Seven Mile days, the Charlie Brown hamburger is not named after the Snoopy car- toon character ... It was titled for a regular customer named Chuck Farrell who looked like Charlie Brown. Seating is for 125, including eight high top-tables, amid dark wood walls, nostalgic photos of Seven Mile, stained glass from the Prudential location, wines and liquor in a display case, with white linen napkins amid a very casu- al atmosphere. Mary's many medals hang in a lighted case ... Sort of telling folks who come that they are in for a culinary treat ... And it is impor- tant to note that along with her excellent food preparations, menu prices have been kept to a rea- sonable minimum. The memory of Diamond Jim Brady's restaurant on West Sev- en Mile is a respected one. That Mary and Tom have re- tained all the wonderful recipes to go along with her culinary com- mand makes for a truly unbeat- able combination. FIRST ANNIVERSARY by Mona Lisa on Woodward, between 13 and 14 Mile, was celebrated Nov. 7 ... The Italian dining oper- ation has jazz entertainment Thursday through Saturday. THERE IS an unfortunate misconception people have when told about Health Department reg- iilntions ... Many of the scores have absolutely nothing to do with health. The question is ... Why can't there be two separate sheets ... One for restaurant violations such as broken tiles, kitchen doors with- out self-closures, etc ... and anoth- er for health violations, which people really are most interested in. Then reputable stations like WDIV-TV can give their "Dirty Dozen" awards with appropriate accuracy ... instead of listing places erroneously like Elie's Cafe in Birmingham, an impeccably clean restaurant, whose low score was on non-health-related things. Citations for a back door not be- ing shut all the way, a light cover in the basement broken, no soap in the restroom ... and the restau- rant wasn't even open yet ... a dish- washer drinking coffee from a regular coffee cup instead of from a Styrofoam one with a lid ... wa- ter pipe in the ice machine one inch from the drain floor instead of two inches, etc. Even the health inspector was shocked that Elie's Cafe appeared as one of the "Dirty Dozen" ... and called owner Elie Mondalek to ex- press her surprise. Restaurants have enough trou- ble keeping their heads above wa- ter without stupid, unrelated ratings ... Why didn't WDIV-TV tell what the ratings consisted of instead of letting people think that health was involved? CELEBRATION BY Stage & Co. on the Boardwalk, Orchard Lake Road south of Maple, began its 35th anniversary ... 35 percent off for two days was a big success ... According to owner Steve Gold- berg, almost $10,000 in food was given away. GOOD WAITRESS Dept. ... Stephie Kovac ... at Beau Jack's on Maple and Telegraph ... Very personable, efficient and a cordial young lady. ❑ • RESERVATIONS NOW TAKEN FOR A GALA NEW YEAR'S EVE Your Hosts, Rick Rogow and Tommy Peristeris Invite You To Join Us For Lunch and Dinner Seven Days LIVE JAZZ T8 Hp UmR StDo A1 Y2 &r,A iFdRnI iDg h A t Y Featuring MILLIE SCOTT and KEVIN CROSBY ASK ABOUT THE EXCELLENT CATERING SERVICES IN OUR PRIVATE FACILITIES 6199 Orchard Lake Rd., N. of Maple • 737-8600 MIMEMP.MMIE Sunday thru Friday Dinner Only 5:00 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. Saturdays are reserved for private parties only.
