grant from Russia, Ms. Zaritsky
works at the Menorah Candle
Manufacturing Company in the
northern Negev.
Ms. Zaritsky, whose husband
Grigory was killed in a work ac-
cident last year, recalls that her
family used to celebrate
Chanukah back in the former So-
viet Union.
"Chanukah candles were cer-
tainly not available. But from
Glasnost onwards, we lived full
Jewish lives. My husband and I
went to Torah classes in our na-
tive St. Petersburg and we
learned all about Judaism. For
people who had grown up under
oppression, it all seemed like a
miracle as great as that of
Chanukah."
With the help of the Jewish
Agency, Ms. Zaritsky immigrat-
ed to Israel in 1994 with her hus-
band and her son Alexander, now
18.
Ms. Zaritsky is one of 60 em-
ployees at the Menorah candle
factory in Sderot, 80 percent of
whom are new immigrants. The
company makes Chanukah can-
dles year-round to keep up with
increasing demand in Israel and
Diaspora.
