down the street, throughout
the neighborhood, all across
metro Detroit and then, finally,
the world, flames sway softly,
gently in the menorahs of Jew-
ish homes. It's wondrous just
to imagine it.
My favorite part of
Chanukah, though, always has
been the lathes. Admittedly, it
caused a small sensation in our
home after I married only to
discover my husband, Phillip,
whose family is from Poland,
preferred the plain potato type,
topped with sugar. Sugar? My
ancestors are from Russia, and
we never even considered any-
thing but potato-and-lathe
onions with sour cream.
I'm proud to say I now dine
on both varieties, though it's
clear my children have inherit-
ed food genes from their father:
They heap on the sugar and

groan at the mere thought of
onion lathes.
In this month's AppleTree
you'll find recipes for lathes to
please every palate, from those
who like them sweet to onion-
lovers like me, to cheese and
tomato and Cajun. Then you
can check out our Celebrate
page, where you'll learn all
about the history of the holi-
day, including
some very fun
facts.
Also be sure to
take a look at this
month's Try It,
You'll Like It page,
which features a
delicious challah
recipe from Ruth
Beresh, and our
To Your Health
section, where
you'll learn lots of
new ways to com-
fort a sick child.
One of the AppleTree's most
popular sections is Kaleido-
scope, the coloring page. (We
have loved seeing your chil-
dren's beautiful art). So we've
decided to expand opportuni-
ties for boys and girls to submit
their drawings for publication.
A new regular feature of Ap-
pleTree is the Pet Page, where
we'll run as many children's
drawings of animals as we can
fit.
Please remember I always
welcome and look forward to
your comments about this sec-
tion. You can reach me at
(810) 354-6060, ext. 257.
