The 105th Congress will be more
conservative than its predeces-
sor, and the Christian Coalition
wants some of the credit.
At a news conference, execu-
tive director Ralph Reed argued
that "conservative Evangelicals
were the firewall that prevented
a Bob Dole defeat from mush-
rooming into a meltdown all the
way down the ballot. For the first
time in 68 years, a Republican
Congress has been re-elected,
and it would never have hap-
pened without conservative peo-
ple of faith who provided the
margin of victory."
Mr. Reed provided polling
data showing that "moral issues
like abortion and gay rights"
mattered far more to self-identi-
fied Christian Evangelicals than
to the general population.
That argument, according to
some analysts here, is intended
to set the stage for what is like-
ly to be a bitter struggle for the
heart and soul of the Republican
Party.
Abortion and gay

Evangelicals.
The party's most conservative
wing, with a major boost from
groups such as the Christian
Coalition, will argue that it was
Bob Dole's discomfort with the
religious right's moral agenda
that cost him the election. But
GOP moderates, including many
Jewish Republicans, will insist
that Mr. Dole lost because he
moved too far in accommodating
these groups.

publican activist. "It may well be
that Bob Dole lost because he ran
a poor campaign, and Clinton an
excellent one. But Fm afraid that
the lesson many in the party will
take from the Dole loss and the
Republican win in Congress is
that we have to move further to
the right in our presidential
choices in the future."
