Rome (JTA) — An Israeli singer
took part in celebrations at the
Vatican marking Pope John Paul
Il's 50th anniversary as a priest.
Wearing a large Star of David
pendant, Rinat Gabayjoined two
other singers — an Italian
Catholic and a Muslim — in per-
forming the song "The Tree of
Faith and Peace" during the out-
door ceremonies in St. Peter's
Square.
Tens of thousands of people —
including 1,600 priests and bish-
ops who, like the pope, had been
ordained in 1946 — crammed
into the square to hear the pope
give a blessing, after which there
was a concert.
The event, the culmination of
10 days of anniversary festivities,
was broadcast internationally.
In a published interview, Vat-
ican spokesman Joaquin Navar-
ro Valls said it was still the pope's
dream to visit Israel and that he
still planned to do so if he could.
Mr. Na.varro said the pope had
almost fully recovered from an
operation to remove his appen-
dix one month ago, and was
ready to resume full activity.
Missing Soldier
Was Kidnapped?
Jerusalem (JTA) — Security
forces believe a soldier who has
been missing for two months was
kidnapped.
Defense Minister Yitzhak
Mordechai said that he believed
that Sharon Edri, 19, was being
held against his will.
Mr. Edri was last seen Sept.
11 at a medical clinic on an army
base in central Israel, where he
was given permission for a one-
day leave.
At the time, Mr. Edri's family
said he had telephoned to say he
was coming home, but then dis-
appeared.
Searches for him have failed
to turn up any information.
Police Commissioner Assaf
Hefetz said police were still in-
vestigating all possible avenues.

Hezbollah
Kills Soldier
Jerusalem (JTA) — One Israeli
soldier was killed and six others
wounded in two days of bloody
clashes in southern Lebanon.
Sgt. Erez Yitzhak, 19, of Ne-
tanya, was killed when his tank
was hit by a missile during an at-
tack launched by Hezbollah gun-
men on an Israel Defense Force
post in the western sector of the
security zone.
Three other soldiers were
unded in the attack, one of
them seriously.
