demand that Mr. Kopatch be
taken off the air.
Avigdor Lieberman, director-
general of the Prime Minister's
Office and overseer of the Israel
Broadcasting Authority, ap-
peared to try to pressure IBA Di-
rector-General Mordechai
Kirschenbaum into at least ton-
ing Mr. Kopatch down.
Mr. Kirschenbaum — who be-
gan his TV career as a
writer/producer of satire —
didn't budge. "No one has a mo-
nopoly on the Bible," he said.
"There is no intention here of
hurting anybody. It must be un-
derstood clearly that not every
faction in the country has the
right to determine what can and
what can't be broadcast."

The IBA executive board vot-
ed to let Mr. Kopatch continue.
The comedian became a cause
celebre for secular Jews. Teen-
age girls attending the Knesset
hearing told Mr. Kopatch that
he had inspired them to take an
interest in the Torah. Last Fri-
day's Yair Lapid show got huge
ratings. Mr. Lapid, who had
vowed, "If Kopatch goes, I go,"
began his opening monologue by
saying, "The country belongs to
everybody, the Bible belongs to
everybody, God belongs to every-
body, and Kopatch will be on
tonight." The audience ap-
plauded triumphantly.
That day's opinion poll in the
Yediot Achronot daily found that
three out of four secular Jews
wanted Mr. Kopatch to stay on
the air, while two out of three re-
ligious Jews wanted him Off.
So is Gil Kopatch really that
good for the Jews?
Rabbi Menachem Avigdor Ha-
Cohen, who hosted Israel Tele-
vision's "serious" weekly Torah
commentary program for some
15 years, said that Mr. Kopatch
should not be taken off the air,
but that the comedian had no
value -for anyone interested in
Judaism.
"There have been so many
satires, caricatures and songs
that related stories and com-
mentaries about the Torah in
contemporary language. Ko-
patch doesn't offer anything
new, nothing fresh, certainly
nothing deep," said Rabbi Ha-
Cohen, who acknowledged that
he had seen only one of Mr.
Kopatch's routines.
