r -) Bomb Blast
In Jerusalem
Jerusalem (JTA) — A small
bomb exploded outside a branch
of the Israeli Interior Ministry
in eastern Jerusalem, lightly
wounding four people and dam-
aging the entrance to the build-
ing.
It was not known whether
the attack had a criminal
or nationalistic motive, police
said.
Police officials added that
they were investigating all
motives, including the possibil-
ity that the bomb attack was
carried out by Jewish extrem-
ists.
Israel has been on high secu-
rity alert since security sources
'2 said there was information
that an Islamic Jihad terrorist
cell had infiltrated Israel
and was planning a terrorist at-
tack on a bus or in a shopping
mall.
Israeli security officials said
the planned attacks were linked
to the anniversary of the 1995
assassination of Islamic Jihad
leader Dr. Fathi Shakaki.
Dr. Shakaki was shot in the
head five times Oct. 26, 1995, in
Malta. Islamic Jihad officials
hold Israel responsible for the
slaying and have vowed re-
venge.
Israel has declined to com-
ment on whether it was behind
the shooting.
U.S. Jews
Appeal Ban
Jerusalem (JTA) — Two Amer-
ican Jews have petitioned the
High Court of Justice to reverse
an order barring them from en-
tering Israel for security rea-
sons.
Michelle Benvenisti, 49, an
editor of the Jewish Press news-
Taper in Miami; and Hillel
Bluestein, 44, an accountant
from Philadelphia, filed the ap-
peal, according to a court
spokesman.
The two are on a list of sev-
en American Jews that Israeli
officials believe are members of
extremist groups.
,, The list was compiled by the
Interior Ministry last year after
the assassination of Prime Min-
ister Yitzhak Rabin.
In their appeal, Benvenisti
and Bluestein denied any in-
volvement with extremist
groups.
They asked the Interior Min-
stry and the attorney general
ro retract all statements sug-
--,
r' esting that they had criminal l
oackgrounds and were involved
n such groups.
