In Congress

After all the electoral fuss, the

Jewish delegation on Capitol Hill
looks remarkably unchanged af-
ter the voting.
In the Senate, both Jewish in-
cumbents up for re-election —
Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., and
Sen. Carl Levin, D-Mich., handi-
ly won. Four Jewish challengers
were beaten back.
In the House, there will be
three Jewish newcomers, all De-
mocrats: Robert Wexler from
Florida, Brad Sherman from Cal-
ifornia and Steve Rothman, the
former mayor of Englewood, N.J.

Two Jewish Senate
incumbents won.

But the total number of Jews
in the House will increase by only
one, to 23. Mr. Sherman replaces
another Jewish member, Rep.
Tony Beilenso, who is retiring; an-
other Jewish member, Rep. Dick
Zimmer, R-N.J., is leaving Con-
gress after a failed bid for the Sen-
ate.
Weeks after the election, the
fate of one nervous Jewish mem-
ber — Rep. Jon Fox, R-Pa. — is
not entirely clear.
Mr. Fox, a GOP freshman who
tried hard to pretend he'd never
heard the words "Newt Gingrich,"
won re-election by only 10 votes
over Joe Hoeffel, a Montgomery
County Commissioner, in what
Jewish Republicans regarded as
a must-win race.
Mr. Hoeffel, who enjoyed ma-
jor support from Jewish Democ-
rats, tried to portray Mr. Fox as a
tool of the Christian Coalition. De-
spite those attacks, Mr. Fox
emerged on top — barely. But the
results will be subject to a recount,
so stay tuned.
Pro-Israel groups aren't exact-
ly rejoicing at the election returns
in Texas, where Ron Paul, a Re-
publican obstetrician turned politi-
cian who served in the House from
1977 to 1985 and ran for the pres-
idency as a Libertarian in 1988,
won a return ticket to Capitol Hill.
The victorious candidate wast-
ed no time throwing down the
gauntlet; in a victory statement,
he promised to "work to abolish
the IRS, the Department of Edu-
cation, the Department of Com-
merce and all other agencies not
specifically authorized by the U.S.
Constitution."
Pro-Israel activists worry that
he also will work to abolish for-
eign aid, especially to Israel. Mr.
Paul has been an implacable foe
of the overall aid program, and
has harshly criticized several
Jewish groups, including the
Anti-Defamation League and the
American Israel Public Affairs
Committee.
