Being Jewish means you
possess a rich cultural
heritage...
and a greater chance of
having your colon
surgically removed.
That's because Crohn's disease and
ulcerative colitis strike Jews 2 to 3 times
more often. And in about half the cases,
surgery is required. Often total
colectomy.
Some 2 million Americans suffer with
Crohn's or colitis. This year alone,
another 30,000 American men, women
and children will be afflicted.
And no matter how extreme their
symptoms, how excruciating their pain,
most of them will suffer in silence,
fearing embarrassment and humiliation.
But silence won't make these diseases go
away. Only research will find effective
treatments and a cure.
Help spare our children - and their
children - the anguish of Crohn's disease
and ulcerative colitis.

ne of the most intriguing
aspects of the World Wide
Web is its ability to pro-
vide a planetary audience
for ordinary people, a fact David
M. Dickerson has put to good
use.
Mr. Dickerson, who
traveled to Poland with a
study tour sponsored by
the International Ed-
ucation and Resource ■ 11.
Network, became en-
amored of Polish syna-
gogues.
The result is an unusual and
attractive Web site devoted to
distributing information about
these institutions. And since this
is the Web, that part of the In-
ternet where graphics reign
supreme, Mr. Dickerson pro-
vides a veritable photo album of
the synagogues he has visited.
His tour opens with several
quotations about the centrality
of the synagogue to Jewish life
in Eastern Europe and a terse
description of his trip. Then Mr.
Dickerson gets down to business;
a series of push buttons offers a
selection of five synagogues to
visit.
A veritable photo
album of
synagogues.
Click on the Nozyk synagogue
and you can read about a Jew-
ish institution founded in 1902
in Warsaw, devastated in World
War II and reconstructed in
1977. During the Nazi occupa-
tion, we learn, the synagogue
was used by the Nazis as a sta-
ble, and it suffered extensive
bomb damage during the War-
saw uprising. To see what it
looks like today, check out the
detailed pictures — the front in-
terior and exterior, the women's
section.
Or choose the Rema syna-
gogue, in the Jewish quarter of
Krakow, which was founded in
1553. In addition to photographs
of the various features of the
synagogue, Mr. Dickerson in-
cludes images of its cemetery
wall, constructed with the pieces
of broken headstones dating
back to the late 1700s.
Eventually, Mr. Dickerson
hopes to offer floor plans and
maps, as well as additional pho-
tographs.
There's also a link to Mr.
Dickerson's personal home page
(http ://www. igc. apc. org/ddick-
e rs on/dm d -h om e html , if you
want to go there directly), which
has easy access to a variety of
other sites dealing with anti-
Semitism, Jewish culture and
the Holocaust, classical music
and literature.
There's nothing fancy here.
The graphics are clear but un-
adorned, and his descriptions,
mostly in the form of brief quotes
from experts on Eastern Euro-
pean Jewry, don't waste any-
one's time.

your den by setting your Web
