SPECIAL TO THE JEWISH NEWS

Generally speaking, we get very
few clues in our constant quest to
figure out what our children are
thinking. Conversation helps
sometimes, if we ask the right
questions.
I think the children's teachers
have an advantage over us par-
ents in the area of deciphering the
unspoken because the children

My middle child is in elemen-
tary school. She headed off to a
Shabbaton last weekend, so after
she left Friday afternoon, the
chore of cleaning the remnants of
lunch out of her backpack fell to
me.
In the course of sifting out the
granola bar crumbs and the sticky
wrappers, I found the following
essay, which I share with you,
spelling, capitalization, punctua-
tion, and all, for our mutual edifi-
cation:

My under water city

One day along time ago I went
scubadiving and this big glass
bubble bumpt right in to me. I was
relly scared. But had an idea. the
next day I went back down and
went inside. when I got in i relised
no water got in. I was amazed.
then i saw wood someone was here
befor. But i took the wood. after a
few days i bilt a house. I was so
happy i could make a city. I would
call it my under water city. when
i got home i told all my friends. the
next day they came with me and
we had lots of fun. after we played
they helped me bild more. 30 days
later we made a giant city. so we
paked our stuff and moved in.
some of our stuff got wet. but we
didn't mind. so we went on with
our lives.

I was doing fine with this saga,
until I got to the last line.
It is hard to imagine someone
living in a new, wooden under-
water city being quite so matter-
of-fact. Just how did they go on
with their lives? Where did they
grocery shop? How did they call
home? What about us non-scuba C.
diving moms? Didn't they miss us?
I always thought I had a good
imagination until I got to this es-
say. She puts me in the shade. ❑
