Linda Ronstadt,

If nothing else, you've got to
give Linda Ronstadt credit for
creativity. How many singers
would even think of recording
a Beach Boys' tune like "In My
Room" — not to mention the
Queen hit "We Will Rock You"
— as a lullaby?
Of course, motherhood does
amazing things to a woman,
and Ms. Ronstadt did recently
become a mother.
As always, Ms. Ronstadt_
sings nicely, and her voice is
appropriately soothing on this
tape. The accompanying in-
strumentation is, well, diffei-
ent. Most often it sounds like a
choir of angels as envisioned by
some New Age musician
whose tunes you invariably7
hear in the dentist's office (un-
less your dentist, like mine, Dr.
Murav, is nice enough to have
a TV so you can catch up on
"Oprah" between the drilling).

The concept of turning con-
temporary rock music into lul-
labies certainly is different, and
it almost works. Only two of
the songs are especially charm-
ing: The classic Brahms' lulla-
by, which somehow found its

esting things with Queen.

way on here (performed in a
duet with the wonderful Aaron
Neville), and Lennon and Mc-
Cartney's "Good Night." The
rest are okay, nothing memo-
rable.
That Queen number is the
worst of the bunch. Though
- Ms. Ronstadt has slowed the
music to a baby-friendly pace,
she can't get around the angry
lyrics no matter how softly and
slowly she sings them. Would
you really want to put your

child to sleep with the words,
"You got mud on your face,
you big disgace, somebody
better put you back in your
place"?

One quick listen to this tape
and you'll see why children are
so enthusiastic about Craig
Tallman: his songs are fun
and full of energy. And unlike
so many Jewish children's
tapes out there, Taubman's are
invariably slickly and profes-
sionally produced.
This collection, recorded in
conjunction with My Jewish
Discovery Place Children's
Museum in Los Angeles, cele-
brates Jewish identity, culture,
holidays and Israel. There's
"Big Trip," about packing and
preparing to see the Kotel,
Haifa, Jerusalem and other Is-
raeli sites; waking up and feel-
ing grateful to be alive in
"Boker Tov" ("Good Morn-
ing"), and, with "Heroes," fol-
lowing in the footsteps of
Miriam, Rachel and Judah
Macabee. Musically, Taubman
tries some country and west-
em, 1950s bebop and even a
rap number.
At times the rhymes can be
a little predictable, which may
grate on parents' nerves (espe-
cially after hearing them for the
10th time). For example:
"Shabbat Shalom, it's the day
of rest, Shabbat Shalom, it's the
day I love best." Still, your chil-
dren are not likely to complain,
and no doubt they would find
your Frank Sinatra records in-
tolerable. ❑
